My hard drive performance is in a terrible state right now. I have tried the disk defragmenter that came with windows, but it goes through my drive where "70%" of the files are fragmented and lowers it to "68%". When I finish it says drive defragmented but I click analyze again and I am again in high need of another defragmentation. Does anyone know a method to REALLY defragment a drive in one sweep? Thx
which windows are you using?
if you're using win98 and have access to winMe, winME defrag works awesome on win98.

I have 3 operating systems. Millennium on my C drive, and XP and Win 2k on a seperate hard drive, formatted in NTFS. I am using Win 2k to defragment this drive because it seemed very slow under Win XP. And it is impossible to defragment through Win ME, because it is not a FAT partition. What I wonder is if there is a program that will run for as long as it takes (2 days+?) and get this 70% fragmentation down to 0%, if it is possible...
If you want to check my state of affairs, with the Win 2k Defragmenter, check out this pic: http://www.geocities.com/heyschaefer/defrag.jpg

isn't it Diskeeper that's all the rave?
if you defrag often, it'll take less time. My 2 40's in RAID (which means I defrag 80 gigs) only takes about 45 mins.
moved to software and operating systems.
I use a program From "Executive Software" called "Diskeeper". They make one program for Servers, and another for Workstations. It's fast, you can schedule it, and it works in the background keeping your HD defragged.
Electronic download, $44.95 or CD $49.95 here (http://www.execsoft.com/execsoft.asp)
I hope this helps you out.

The short answer isspeed.
Raid Level-0, or "Striped", reads & writes to 2, or more hard drives at the same time, making it faster. Also, if you start with 2, 40 gig drives, it will appear as one 80 gig drive. One really fast 80 gig drive

Do you have enough free space to perform a full defrag? Before defragmentarion I always clear all my temporary internet and other temp files that have accumulated.
Also you might want to optimise your swap file, set the min and max settings to the same value.
