Help!!!!
I've got 98se on a 10 gig drive.I've partitioned my drive to 2- 5 gig sections. Now, here's my problem. C drive (boot drive) keeps shrinking! I swear to god. I've cleaned almost a gig woth of files, and the damned thing keeps filling up with something! Today, for instance, I had almost 350 MB free on the drive. Now, I haven't installed any new programs, or downloaded any files. I've emptied the History and Temp. Internet files...in fact, I've cleaned up the drive 4 times today! Now, I'm down to 115 MB!!!!
I've rebooted several times, but I get the same problem over and over. Help, please!!!
Do you have an antivirus program?

I think that it would be strange if you discovered something new with 98se at this point...
Something is afoul, and I doubt is has anything to do with SE...
Sorry, but I don't think you can blame MS for this one.
Have you considered the swap file?

Swap File sounds like a likely culprit to me, extremely likely.
It sounds feasable. But out of a 10 gig HD. That would have to be one hell of a big swap file. I know Default setting's for max swap file size are what's left as far as space on the HD. But I've never had it get that big. Unless you've got that drive just crammed with stuff? Is the drive almost full to begin with?

Yes, I belive you are all correct in saying the swap file is the problem, but how do I fix it? I've tried limiting the swap file to 300Mb (when I had the extra space) but I got virtual memory errors occasionaly. And yes, the HD is nearly "full", but only because of this problem! I've cleared out nearly a gig worth of space.I really don't know what else to do other than buy a new HD and partition 1 gig worth of space to the swap file.
lets see if i rember how to fix swap file, i just got into xp and its completly differnet. try cleaning out temorary internet files(not thru disk cleanup, its misses some. do a search for *.gif, *.jpg, etc.) right click on my computer, hit the last tab or 2nd to last(name?) and there it should be around there. i think its temproary files. i deleted mine after 2 years, it was 300-400mb of nothing but html pages. diskcleanup dosnt work, just try searching in temporary internet files for extensions..common ones.

It is not that hard. Just go into the contol panel and set your swap file, top and bottom, at what you want. Make sure they are the same top and bottom...
Delete the wap file after that. Shouldn't be hard to find, it will be huge...

Thanks guys. I already manually emptied the Temp Internet file, and did get back about 50MB. What's a wrap file? And why does the Min and Max file size need to be the same when you set V memory manually.
OK..
First of all its before your set a new swap file you want to defrag because if you don't your SWAP file is going to be all screwed ...
Your SWAP file min and max should be the same that's how it is :)
Usually minimum should be your RAMx1.5 and I recommend your RAMx2..
Good Luck!

Sorry, guess I was getting ahead of you. I set the min and the max to the same size so that the swap is a fixed size. This lets you know up-front how much is allocated. Furthermore, and most importantly, this will boost performance because if windows is allowed to change the size of your swap, it will slow things down.

Ok, thanks, I reset the file sizes properly on D drive. But the available space on C drive is still shrinking...181 KB this morning!!
Flounder43 mentioned deleting the "wrap" file. Where is this file located? I can't find it, and I have no idea where to look.
Try looking for a folder or files in a folder that shouldn't be there or is really big. Mabey try a search for all files that are new within a day. These files should give you a clue as to what program is causing the disk to fill up.

Here is a tip from PC magazine. The c:\windows\applog folder can grow and grow. I just checked my son's Win98 machine and his folder is 10 megs in size. I don't know what the upper limit is but I would check it.
They haven't released the User to User solution from the Nov 27 issue on the net as of today. The use of the applog folder is for Defrag to check it so that it will optimize disk location for most frequently used programs. If you don't care about this you can turn it off.
in regedit go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Applets\Defrag\AppStartParams
In the right hand pane find or create f DWORD value named UseProfile and set its value to 0
Could there be files where that load up more bigger files more and more?
Sort of like IE and its cache.
already told him to clear cache, ie saves everything, and disk cleanup never gets all of it.
they(M$ft, IBM, etc.) expect everyone to just buy new hard drives constantly, overflowing whatever stuff we got on one into another. and we do it too.
Lots of HDD are being broken now ..
Why not spend a little money on like a 20 gig..
20 gig is usually enough.

Thanks, Martyt, I checked the folder and got rid of nearly 20 MB. But I'm down to 416 kb as I write this! I really have no damn idea what's happening. I've cleared over 1 gig worth of files off this drive in the last month (nearly 50 MB in the last 24 hours),haven't installed any new programs or devices/drivers, do not have any detectable viruses, and still have the space problems in Safe Mode! Yes, I am going to buy a new HD this weekend, but that's only a temporary solution, if I can't isolate the problem. Here's an interesting note: D drive (the one I assigned a permanent swap file to) is not experiencing this problem. D drive is simply a partition of C (the drive I'm having the problem with), not a separate unit. Does this suggest anything to anyone? I've manually emptied all the IE folders, as one of you suggested, and they still appear empty, even when I click "show all files", which includes hidden and system files. Thanks to all of you for your help, and if you think of anything else, please let me know!

2 things to check
run scandisk or check disk?
disable all the utility software or any antivirus software....just uninstall all these software and see if the problem solve ?
you can re-install them later on ....no problem
that should do it...hope this help...try it and let us know how everything is
There are two things I would consider.
One is to buy a new copy of Norton AV and run it from the CD (don't install it) if possible. This will check for known virus activity as of the date the CD was pressed.
The second is to go through every folder that is on the C:\ folder area and write down all the sizes. Wait a bit and do it again to see what is growing.
