I have not tryed it myself as I've been Quaked out for a long time now. But I've been hearing quit a bit about this problem. Are you using the drivers that came with Win XP, Or the latest from you Vid Card company?

I myself had to get the latest from ATI for Win XP. Cause the ones that come with XP don't have the display adjustments with it. So you cannot adjust the 3D gamma. Once I got them it made a big difference in a lot of games.

try getting the new 22.55 drivers. If nothing else they'll most likely speed your card up. I have the same card and it went up 10 points in 3dMark2001. big improvement for the card.

hmmm did you try the latest dl for winxp? Also did the new drivers help your performance(just wondering)? If that doesn't work I would try re-installing q3 just because that's all i can think of.

I have no problems running Quake 3 on Win XP just so long as I am running Quake 3 with patch 1.27g otherwise the game display seems to feature poor lighting and locks up occasionally unless it is run in compatibility mode as a Win98 application

Thank you for taking the time to contact us here at Activision.

There are a few things you can try to adjust the brightness in Quake 3:

If you have an Nvidia chipset try getting the latest XP drivers they have
released for there hardware. You can find them at www.nvidia.com.

You can also try and go to www.rivazone.com and get idgamma.

The 1.30 patch and above should fix this problem. You can get the patch here-
http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_temp.asp?patch=quake3arena

If it doesn't you can also try the fixes below.

Type the following command at the console:

/r_ignorehwgamma 1

/vid_restart

See if that helps.

You can also try the following:

/r_ignorehwgamma 0

/r_overbrightbits 0

/vid_restart

This should mean that the brightness slider works as usual.

If that doesn't help, try typing the following commands at the console:

/r_mapoverbrightbits x

/vid_restart

where x is a value from 2 to 3.

To really brighten things up try this (http://www.ecolor.com/page.asp?content=colorific_and_3deep&lev1=1&lev2=1_4&lev3=1_4_1)

3Deep is soooo cool.
