View Full Version : Gamecube
Well, after the failure that FFXI was, I bought a gamecube for some fun games.
On ebay it came with HD Cables, Legend of Zelda WindWaker, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and controller for $100 including shipping. So hell with it I bought.
What are the best games for Gamecube? I love RPG's, whats a good one for it.
Is Zelda WW a fun game?

Best game is Resident Evil 4.
Paper Mario 2 is a very good RPG type game.
Just to name two.

I want to buy a game cube just for mario double dash. Nothing like a few friends getting together with a few brews and having a mario cart tourny :)

Man, that's anice deal :( I want some HD cables, but they run about $30.... Metroid Prime is supposed to be fairly decent. I would suggest paper mario or final fantasy Crystal Chronicles for RPGs(both of which I am going to pick up ASAP!)
For RPGs, you can't do much better than Tales of Symphonia (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=380787&highlight=tales+symphonia). What an absolutely fantastic game!
Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games released for the console to date. It really showcases what the Gamecube hardware is capable of. It's also a tremendously fun game. You may also want to get Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1: Remake. You can get both games in a combo pack called the 'Pure Evil Collection' or somesuch for a fairly reasonable price.
You're going to want a copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash, too. Games that fun should be illegal.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a fantastic game! Don't let the cell shading fool you; you're going to love it once you start playing.
You'll also want to pick up The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess when that is released. It looks phenominal.
If you can, get a Wavebird. By far the best wireless controller I've ever used. It's light and repsponsive, and has long battery life.
That's about it for now. :)

If you can find it in your area, get Animal Crossing!
Got it for my wife for our anniversairy.... and she loves it. It is a cross between "The Sims" and "Harvest Moon". You can alternate 1-4 players in the same village.
Time passes in game 100% realtime. if it is midnight in RL, it is midnight in game. Seasons change appropriately.... Holidays happen as they do in RL.
You CAN cheat the game by upping the time on your Gamecube... but i feel that is cheating. Once you get the basic first day done, you only need to play 1 hour a day to keep up in game... do a couple of errands for your neighbors, go dig up all the gold, pay off debt to Tom Nook, and send off write/read letters needed (ESPECIALLY to the Museum to identify fossils!)

I highly recommend Resident Evil 4, it is extremely violent though. It is now a players choice, and if you dont buy it for $20 or less, you are probably getting ripped off.(I just saw it at Target for $20, Players Choice Edition)
Resident Evil 4($20)
Game of the Year according to several Game review communities. According to wiki, it won atleast 55 awards:

I would, for an RPG, recommend:
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door($50)
Funny, and a bit differnt from most RPGs. Lots of Mario Charecters too.

Baten Kaitos(about $30)
I really like Baten Katios, it uses a very unique, fast, battle system, that uses cards, quick actions, preperation, and quick thinking. Graphics are great, and the battle system is a little compex, it is all realtime, so you have to act fast. But, luckly, it is easy to learn how to use the battle system, and the battle system keeps getting more, and more complex as you play, even after 20+ hours of playing, more elements are added to the battle system to spice it up. No 2 battle are the same.

Tale of Symphonia($20)
Lots of fun, I have not played to much of this one, so... I actualy cant really recommend this. But many, many people do recommend this...

Skys of Arcadia Legends(about $30)
Wow, well I have not played this for awhile, it is fun, but it gets alittle bit repetitive, and it is very long, 60+ hours to beat the game. Actualy, I think Baten Katios and Tales of Symphonia takes more than 50+ hours each too.

I also recommend Super Smash Bros Melee($20)
Probably the one of the best console multiplayer games ever.

GameCube is great, but if you dont already have one, you may want to consider waiting till the Nintendo Revolution comes out, its expected price is $199 or less, and among its many features, it is backward compatible with about every game, and item released for the GameCube.

That is my plan. And thats why I was saying what I did, I want to play those games NOW! Well, I already have RE4 for my PS2, and I love that game to death, one of the best games ever imo.

I think the worse thing about gamecube is lack of DDR. I want Mario DDR so bad. Just a month left and it will finally be mine.
Played windwaker, mario sunshine, re4 and loved them all for gc.
Also played eternal darkness I think was the name of it. Another good game. Kinda old but still good. Beyond good and evil pwned on the pc, gc has a version of it. I read that mario baseball is fun and mortal combat deception. Killer 7 may also be good. Prince of Persia is also on gc if you haven't gotten into that series yet, good games. I definately wana get mario kart, re0 and re1. Those are going to be my next games.
I bought mario smash brothers and I personally didn't care for it too much. I think MK1 and 2 from SNES is better than that. I played DBZ sagas. It's OK, very short and kind of boring though.
Thanks guys! Im gonna get Re4 and Papermario, and then Zelda Twilight Princess.
Tales of Symphonia is definately one of the games you want if you want to play RPG's on the GameCube its also my second favorite one the cube... And RE4 is amazing(its my favorite).
Anyone tried the gamecube on a plasma tv? I have a 42inch plasma, thats why I got the cables. You think it will look good? Or disstorted?

The gamecube doesnt support HD resolutions, so you might have to setup your TV for 4:3 display, besides that, should look awsome!

I can't, its a 16:9 display. So it will look bad on a 16:0? Cause the cables make it 480P.

It should look fine... Generally your TV will automatically scale down slightly, IIRC....
If you can't use the cables... *cough cough* I can :)

My TV is 16:9 in 480p automatic. i can't change it. most games (RE4, metroid, zelda: WW) look perfectly fine in 16:9.
as far as games go:
zelda:WW, RE4, Metroid Prime & 2 (first was much better IMO), Mario Kart: DD, Star Wars Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike (both great games), SUPER SMASH BROTHERS MELEE... hmm, what else do i have... the metal gear solid: twin snakes was good.
there are plenty more good games, like RPGs, but i don't like RPGs much. tales of symphonia and the final fantasy games for GCN are good i've heard.
Another vote for Metroid Prime. Slick graphics, decent shooter, and the little touches with the visor just make it a very appealing game, graphically.
Also suggest, oddly enough, Monkey Ball. Challenging and fun, if you enjoy arcade type games.

RE1 and RE2 were released with the reworked graphics.... RE2 and RE3 were just psx versions translated to the cube, so the graphics look the same as in the psx.
I also suggest Eternal Darkness, a very fun game

Wow you got a heck of a deal!!!
Now just get Resident Evil 4 and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (like somebody else suggested) and you'll have the best games for the platform in my opinion.
As for Zelda: WW, yes it's pretty good. About a 9/10 compared to Ocarina of Time.

RE2's graphics were not updated in any way; they are the same as you'd see on any previous version of the game. They are pixel-licious. The only one to recieve a makeover was Resident Evil 1.

Damn, you're right!
Any fighting game w/ Link in it is ultimately the best fighting game ever! :)
As I said before, I hate you all, very very much, now I want to play gamecube very badly, and the soonest I can is in 2 weeks! ARGHARHAGHAERHAERHGAE!!!11!
Gamecube also has the redone Metal Gear solid 1.

Some games support 480p on the gamecube, and if you bought a series 1 GC, you have 2 A/V outputs, one for analog and one for digital. They stopped putting on digital after a while, so you might want to check.
Tales of Symphonia for RPG, and my all time favorite FIFA 06! I've had FIFA 04, FIFA 05, and finally FIFA 06...... We have literally spent whole nights in front of the tube having FIFA Tourneys, and the "FIFA Lounge" keeps track of the stats for you.

Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Tennis/Golf/baseball, Metroid Prime 1/2, Resident Evil 0/4, Rogue Squadron 2/3.

Mine has a digital out..so what that does that mean?...my cube I just got off ebay came with the madcatz s-video cable not bad...would have wished it was progressive though since I have an HDTV.
also anyone with cube think progressive scan is a big difference...I know for my xbox I saw a huge improvement with some monster cables but that's xbox every game is atleast 480p....on PS2 I got the prog. cables and hardly any game is prog.

The Digital Out is for home theater receivers that have an optical input. I notice on Digital 5.1 stuff that the sounds are cleaner, louder and have better channel separation. On things that are DTS recorder....well it is AMAZING sounding, not describable you have to hear it to believe it and THX if you're lucky enough to have the receiver and speakers is OMFG!!!! I can't tell much difference between S-Video and 480p to be honest. On some older stuff where there were previously scan lines, wiht 480p there aren't any.

Even if the prog scan isn't that much better, the colors are MUCH better with component rather than svideo. i'd definately grab the cables.
your GCN MUST BE DOL-101, and not DOL-102 (i think those are the numbers) for Hi-Def to work. All of my GCN games run in progressive scan.
As far as rpgs go, I think someone mentioned Skies of Arcadia earlier, and I definitely support that! It's a great game. Lots of random battles, but it's really fun and unique. Also make sure you pick up both Metroid Prime games, they're amazing.

ok digital audio out....I was upset to find out my monster cables for xbox needed a special digital audio cable for sound out...my receiver has a circle surround mode which one up's prologicII into splitting the rears seperatly which it sounded very good so I never dropped the $60 for a digital audio cable. Nice to know the cube has it though. For me jumping to progressive scan on the xbox I noticed the polygon's were alot sharper more than anything...I do however sometimes get subtle morre patterns with s-video and component cables because my TV upconverts everything to 1080i...I don't see that with proc cables though...so maybe I will get some for the cube.
I played Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast..yes that is a fun RPG
