Youre probably sick of questions like this but...

I have a 1.3gig AMD Processor (Thunderbird, How do I tell?) and I want to know how to over clock it. Ive read that I need to make sure that the L1 pins are all connected.
My motherboard is a Gigabyte 7IXE4, and the only thing for setting the CPU speed is a block of 3 DIP switches. But these set the Clock Frequency. Its currently set at 110mhz and my cpu runs at 1375 mhz. Stable. If i set em to 115mhz my cpu runs at 1500mhz but the computer keeps restarting it self. But could this have something to do with the memory speed? I have three sticks of 128 meg in, two are 133 and one is 100 mhz.Should I clock it to 1500 and take the 100mhz out?

All help/guideance would be appreciated...;)

Welcome to The Forum CyberGuru. I too have a Gigabyte board with only FSB clock setting. The max FSB I can get is 110Mhz without the Modem crashing on me.
You could try removing the stick of PC100 RAM and set your memory to 133Mhz or try a FSB of 115Mhz. I would think that the memory is your weakest link. Although if your MoBo chipset is based around the KT133, 110Mhz FSB is a good overclock.
There is no point in having an unlocked chip on a MoBo that does not support multiplier settings. It is only the multiplier that is unlocked when the L1 bridges are connected.
Hope this helps a little and if you have any more questions about the Gigabyte board you have, post in the Mobo section and I will do my best to help.

well done 13oots2 on the promotion to senior member...

FSB speed increases mean faster running over all on the system

The bigger the pipe the more liquid can fit through it at the same time that quote from another post springs to mind.

You must have some knowledge because at only over 350 posts you must have done some good to be a senior member

Thanks lennytiger, all I have done is follow the rules and help other Members. I've never flammed, used the asterisks only once(and that was in context) and offered the best advice I can. If I don't know something and the thread has no replies, I will do a search on Google.
Pretty simple stuff really, common sense and courtesy goes a long way. It makes this Forum what it is.

One thing I have always wondered about. How does your member status change? eg. new member...member..senior member.

Your statua changes from New member to Member at 100 posts. You have to be voted on by the mods to get promoted to senior member. That's when you get the cool blue stars.

Thanks for the help. Gonna take the strip of 100mhz out and try that. if it works ill get some faster mem...
Mazybe one day Ill be a senior member... ahhh!
Thanks again for the help... :D

But does the fact that I have clocked the CPU (even unstably) to 1500mhz show that my cpu came from the factory with the L1 pins connected?

no, having the L1s connected will just allow you to change the multiplier. Yours should be unlocked, everything after the 1.2s is i think. Anyway, youre just upping the fsb, so that has nothing to do with the L1s. Givin your board and all, I would say thats not a bad OC.

Right. The saga continues...

I took out the 100mhz strip of memory and put the clock speed to 115mhz. All was well untill windows (XP Final) came to the logon screen and the computer reset its self.
I did a little bit of investigating and took my heatsink and fan off my CPU and looked at it. It has the L1 pins connected so I could clock it, but this mobo only allows clock speed changes. Not multiplier changes.

PS... Putting the heat sink and fan back on, I got it the wrong way round and had heat problems. Temp going way into the 80's and then the computer froze, and then a siren came from the PC Speaker. I thought Id killed my cpu.

PPS... When my PC boots the Bios says CPU Speed: 1375 Mhz,
But windows reports it as 1.43GHz...Whos right, or are they both right?

The correct speed is the one which you see in Windows cause:

13*110 = 1430Mhz

You can upgrade your mainboard BIOS so that it recognizes the speed correctly.

Usually when the Windows fails to boot its probably a voltage problem. Do you know if your mainbaord supports Voltage adjustment?

I tried to look in the mainboard manual and it says CPU voltage autodetect. I think that this means that you cannot adjust the voltage.

What you can do is connect the L7 bridges so you max the Voltage for your chip.

What type of heatsink+fan do you have?

The heatsink and fan is a Cooler-master. I dont think its anything special. But if i needed a new one thats ok cos I took it off the other night and now it doesnt seal too good to the die on the chip. The CPU voltage is locked/auto detected, there are no options in the bios/jumpers. I dont fancy connecting the L7 pins myself.
