View Full Version : What did I do Wrong? (Linux)
I downloaded 3 ISO images from the download site and burned the first copy. When I went to open the cd it said that it wasnt a valid win 32 application. Am I doing something wrong?
erm, yes.
You don't install linux through windows (well, not usually).
Try booting off the first cd and that will take you through the installation. You will need about three partitions to install linux, as it is a seperate Operating System. Try booting off the first CD and that should work (you may have to adjust the boot order in your BIOS).
I'll give it a try. Also do I have to partition the HD before I load Linux?
It would help to know which distribution you downloaded, but in general the installation will walk you through the partitioning process.

I downloaded Mandrake 8.1/i586ISO Image from linux-mandrake.com
OK, it will do all the partitioning during install. Mandrake is a very user friendly install, it should be pretty painless. Having said that, of course you should back up any critical data before installing a new OS. Accidents can and do happen.

I haven't gotten around to load Linux yet but I do have one more question. Do I have to finalize a data cd before I can use it? If so How do I do it from Nero? They all have been burned already

One thing to remember you have to tell Nero and other software the boot img file to boot if you are trying to make a bootable CD for install.
dont ask me I dont remember in detail to tell anyone how :) sorry
I just know you have to do it :)
I thought you just had to burn from image and then nero would burn the cd.
I think you need to set up the el torito or rockridge extensions or something. There should also be a floppy image you could boot from, which would work.

If it's an image you're all set...cause it's an exact copy of what you would get from them if you bought it. Just stick it in and boot from it. :)
You can't just burn the image like you would a CD with some data on it, though. You have to open it like you would a document.

you shouldn't use something like iso buster to view it and just copy all the files out to burn them. It won't work, trust me. I got some thing called BurnDrive that did the job. I'm sure you can do it in Nero too, I just don't know how.
Dont know about Nero, but CD-Creator 5 (and previous) you go to the File menu and there is an option that says "Create CD from Image" and then it will open a dialog box for you to choose the CD image and you are set.
almost forgot, you must not have burned it right the first time, because with Mandrake if you stick the CD in the drive while in windows (if auto-run is on) it will pop up a box that will let you create a boot floppy or install Lin-for-win.
to create a boot floppy stick a floppy in the drive, then click on the "creat boot floppy" button, then click the write tab, and in the image file box, go to the cdrom then to the images folder, then choose the cdrom.img then just click "write". Now you have a install boot floppy.
