I recently installed windows xp pro and tries to run windows update. For some reason, the software on the microsoft site won't work, and I get an error meesage that the software won't update. My security is set at low, and I'm set to accept all cookies. Any ideas why it won't work?

I've been through a few loads of XP pro @ work but I haven't seen the same problem. Did you do a fresh install or an upgrade? I know it's time consuming but you might want to try again with a fresh, non-upgrade install.
How are you accessing the internet? Did you check your dial-up/cable/dsl before attempting the update?

I reformatted and reinstalled, but results were the same.
I can connect to the interent just fine...but no windows update?!
I think it may be something with the network settings because the computer that I connect through the internet through can run windows update on XP no problem.
Any suggestions?

Are you on a LAN at work or is this a home setup? Are you using Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)? There is a Proxy client feature..they changed the name. Internet Connection Firewall maybe?
I checked Uncle Bill's support site but there's waaay too much BS to sift through. You might need to enable the XP version of Proxy client if your on a network. I'm stumped. I'll take a look at the work machines tomorrow and let you know what I find out.

This is a home network.
We are using internet sharing, and everything else works fine.
Firewall has been disabled, as this was my first thought.
Thanks in advance
Ie problem, know it from waaayy back;) Seriously, this problem should also result in problems searching from the start menu and maybe errors in Network Neighborhood. That is if HTML in folder views is enabled. I havent seen it in XP but 98 and Me had it so the problems the same.......IE.......Win 95's non integrated browser never did it. So any way, go to internet properties>>General>>Temporary Internet Files>>Settings>>View objects
You should see an object(file) called "Update Class". Delete this. Close all windows. Goto windows update. All good?http://koti.mbnet.fi/antiqser/smilies/teleport.gif
