why the hell would anyone waste their time on their pc over something that we're never going to find???
answer me that...
What else are you going to use all those cpu cycles for?

Whether we find ET or not, look at the tremendous effort that has been put forth not only in computing power, but also in organization.
This type of thing had never been done before, but they made it work, and work well.
Your computer is just sitting there when you aren't using it, why not put it to use?

Looks like someone didn't have his Cheerios this morning.
I assume that, since you think this is garbage, you're using your computer for something else, right? Protein folding? Prime number search? Breaking encrytion? No? Well, I'm sure those monsters you kill on your game will benefit humanity one day. :D
FYI, we don't really "do" anything. We just set the program up and it takes care of the rest. The way I see it, this machine may as well be *doing* something rather than just being an ugly ornament for my desk.
Lighten up and join in the nerd-fest.

Excellent way to put it! Also did you know rubber was discovered by accident. Well we might find ET by accident. You just don't know. It doesn't hurt anyone. Besides I hardly touch those computers I have crunching, which solves my computer addiction right? I mean instead of just using all three computers all the time, I only use one. I am also sorry that you don't see why we crunch data for SETI.

What are you talking about!!!!!!!! I sit here ALL DAY and monitor seti spy!!! That's what it's there for!!! If I did not monitor it, the whole thing could go down in flames!!! I had tickets to the world series, but I decided not to go so I could crunch!!!!

for your information i do something far more reasonable, and realistic...i help the CERN particle accelerator in Europe do calculations on the precise energies needed to find the Higgs particle. It saves them lots-o-money from renting out supercoputer time, and it advances modern physics, rather than looking for some thing that we will never see in our lifetimes
You are entitled to your own opinion, but there's no need for this kind of post in this forum. If you want to debate this move it to the proper forum. If you want to harass people that do believe in the Seti project you're going to find yourself suspended from the forums altogether.

You need to learn what is appropriate for this forum. This is not the first time that you have pushed the limits. If you care to discuss something, we fully encourage you to. However, we do enforce posting in the proper forum (this is NOT the proper forum for this, Debates or even Gripes and Moans would be), and we do not support personal attacks (which, by posting in the wrong place, you are doing) as it lends an air of hostility and anger.
Again, we respect your opinions and we DO encourage you to share them with us. However, we also require you to do so in such a way that you not fester an environment which is not conducive towards helping and learning.
If you care to contact me personally, feel free to do so. I have just about any method of contacting in my profile.

If the moderators will allow me to antagonize briefly, I would appreciate it. :)
What makes you think that we'll see the Higgs boson in our lifetime? That's what the SSC was supposed to be built for. Now we expect a smaller, less powerful CERN collider to find it?
Higgs in only "real" in theory, the same way that ET is only "real" in theory. Both could be right. Both could be wrong. We won't know for sure if Higgs is there until we look, right? The same holds true for ET or Spock or whoever *may* be there.
And regarding your last post (flame): that's uncalled for. There is a lot of useful information in these forums. Posts like that can get you banned from that information. Use your head. You're obviously not a total moron. Take your idea that this is BS to the Debates forum and there'll be plenty of people you can argue with there. You'll probably even find others who think we're wacko, too. And one final piece of unsolicited advice: edit the flame before a mod sees it. You're time here will be much more pleasant. Enjoy!

You do not have the right to say whatever you want. This is a private forum, therefore we have the right to restrict what you say. We don't do that much. We have very simple rules, really. No swearing. No personal attacks. No warez. No porn. No bigotry. No advertising.
We also have topics so that members know where to go for certain types of conversation. This is not about SETI so much as it is either a GRIPE that SETI exists, or a DEBATE about the usefulness of SETI.
These are rules that you agreed to when you joined.
I personally think it's awesome. Most of us take SETI very seriously and our team is very tight. Almost like a family. So please post your negative comments elsewhere! If you just posted that to create an uproar, then this is the wrong place, because I think we're up for the challenge! :)

You could approach this in a positive way and help your cause. I have an interest in most matters of a scientific nature. If you could gain enough interest and show yourself to be tolerant of others interests, you might find people here interested in CERN's project.
Instead of wasting your energies dismissing something we believe in, devote your energies to positively promoting what you believe in. I might be prepared to listen to what you have to say then.

To you it might be bulls***, my friend, but to us it's every bit as serious a scientific project as CERN research. I had a nosy at the distributed project they run, and it looks very interesting. However, people like you can only give it a bad rep with talk like that.
overclockers has two projects, Folding and SETI. How do you think it would be if we bitched at each other about it?
There is a friendly rivalry, and I stress FRIENDLY.
I crunch, somebody else folds, but we're both Overclockers...........
I strongly suggest a change of attitude in your opinions of other distributed computing projects.

Hey I'm into amateur radio and built a small radiotelescope myself using an old C-band 8' satellite antenna! To me it's something interesting, a way to stress my system AND a way to put otherwise wasted electricity to good use. I just wish I could listen to the data it crunches.

So you donate your PC resources to help save CERN money which may be a great cause.
You don't believe that Seti, will in our lifetime, find any evidence of ET.
That is fine.
But how do you know for sure that we will not find ET? As more and more people donate their PC resourses to the SETI project, the greater the possibility of finding ET in our or the next lifetime.
When Jules Verne wrote his book about space exploration 'From the Earth to the Moon', his vision was not realized in his life time, rather, several generations later. So, SETI's vision may not be realized in this life time - but what about in future generations.
Research and exploration is the basis of all discoveries - SETI has a place in distributed computing - with an idealology like yours, we would probably still be making fire by rubbing two sticks together.
besides, seti is completely a part of many of our overclocking experience. get those extra mhz to crunch faster. like readdeath said, it's competition... marching on up the oc.com seti team ladder, and the team marching on up the seti ladder. like any competition it's a lot of fun.

Hey flounder43...major bad news for you and Minnesota! I feel for you and your anger in your sig! The only reason Milwaukee isn't on the "list" is we just built a new stadium. The new stadium attracted over 2 million people to the games this year. The real trick will be next year...once the "new stadium glow" wears off, will Milwaukee fans still go to the games? I personally doubt it.
And, oh yeah, SETI@Home is just fun. The idea that something really important might come out of the work is just gravy.

I find the arrogance implied by the opening post in this thread astonishing.
Why is it not possible, that among the billions of stars (and totally unknown number of planets) out there that there could not be some with intelligent life on them.
Indeed, statistically, it seems very likely bordering on almost certain, that such such life does exist. The distances involved mean we will probably never be able to communicate, let alone visit, but it would be wonderful just to KNOW that "someone" is out there.
And that, Rafterman223, is why I choose to crunch. And it's about choice - my choice - to do what I see fit without needing anyone's else's approval.

I love Overlockers.Com and my SETI team. I am retired and "Gaming" gets old. So does surfing...........SETI makes theese cycles I'm NOT using put to good use.
I'm new on the Team and Crunched 40 WU's my first week. Makes me proud

Well i for one joined this team and started doing seti because i saw an opportunity to be in a contest of sorts to which this team may become #1 and i wanted to be there for world recognition. Also I kinda of know that finding a signal is next to nothing. I believe that there is some other life out there but the only way i think we'll find any transmissions are via light type. Radio waves take way to long to travel anywhere and if we did receive any most likely that civilization has been dead for millions of years. Besides how can 3,356,146 members be wrong about thinking there is other life?
You know what arguement i love ending with church invovled people is the one where they don't believe in aliens. I tell them remember when the church condemned Galileo to life imprisonment for heresy for such things as his findings to the world was round or all the known universe didn't revolved around us, etc.. Boy do those people look stupid now. I feel sorry for that guy strongly believing in something like that , being punished for being right and not until 1992 the Pope acknowledged the churchs error.
