Having a problem with it. It used to read and write to DVD's. Now it doesn't detect the dvd anymore. Put an original movie in it. Says can't read it. Used too. I use it very little. Only to burn DVD's and CD's in it and that is a rarity. Use my primary drive for everything else. Figuring it would be cheaper to replace than the burner drive. It will read and burn Cd's fine. Is there another reader on the head of it that does DVD only and it failed? If this thing failed I will never buy a Sony again. Bought it because they were good in results I read. I have another new one (Sony DRU-530A) I could try. But didn't want to open case up to try it. Figure ask here first before I do. I did find some info on the net about people unhappy with them and failing after a year or less.

Any help would be nice

Beginner,
No go on a movie DVD I burned or a data dvd. Lights starts runs for a few than light goes out and no more activity. Could it be dirty inside and only DVD reader doesn't work? Seems odd to be if it is that. All cd setups work fine. Can burn cd and open cd. Just no DVD burn or open. :(

do you have powerdvd or windvd on your pc?

have you tried flashing your drive with the latest firmware? either the drive has gone bad or theres a software setting/missing on your pc?

if you need help flashing your drive send me a pm, i think i know somebody with a rpc1/speed patched version of the firmware for this drive.

Go to the Sony site, there is a diagnostic utlility there that you can run.

Guys

Just tried the other new one I had in the box (DRU-530A). It reads fine with no problems. So this means what? I have a usless drive. It only reads cds and burns cds. No go on any dvd at all. Sony test failed to even recognize the dvd was in it. Only had this a little over a year. If I would have known it was going to fail, would have bought another companies instead. Have used it very little too. Sony had good write ups so bought one. Figured it's a Sony it's good. Man what a mistake I guess? :(( Unless I am missing something the firmware would not help this would it? Didn't try to update it. Just grabbed other drive that was bought within a week of the other one.
