Greetings,
I have been running my submersible pump for a couple days for leak testing. It started making a vibrating sound which grew louder over the course of time.
It seems to still pump as well, but does anyone have any ideas why this noise is happeneing?
Here is the pump stats:
"TOP FIN" brand
250 GPH
946 LPH
14W
Submersible impeller style
Thanks,
BJL;)

how much load is there? is it FULLY submerged?

Thanks for looking. Yes, it is submerged fully in one of those 4x4x4 electrical junction boxes. But to be sure, I took it out and put it in a large kitchen bowl I had to see if that made a difference, and it did not.
There is a small load, through one waterblock of average size (2x2x1/4" pipe thread), and through a transmission cooler of around 3/8" diameter.
Thank you,
BJL;)
Been through a whole bunch of pumps. If it's a submerged pump and making noise that is not resonance in the reservoir, there is a problem with the pump. FWIW, I switched to inline. Easier to switch pumps and less heat added to the coolant.

is it because you pump is quite powerful ?
i am currently using a eheim 1048 152gph...
i can only hear the reservoir vibrate a bit if i listen to it closely

Your system may not be entirely free of air. I thought my system was bled completely until it started making noises. If possible with your setup you'll want to tip your system in various directions while the pump is running to get all the air out. This will also improve you cooling performance
My guess is your pump is too powerful, if your forcing too much water through a small outlet I often found I got alot of air pressure/bubbles around the impeller resulting in a coffee grinder like noise. Just to test it remove any restrictions from the system I,E) water block, radiatior etc. If the noise stops then you'll need to find more ways of allowing the water to flow more freely, more outlets etc. I had the same effect with a 1200 litre pump. As soon as it had to force that much water through the system it started to sound awful. I did try and mess around with multiple feeds but the result looked like a weird octopus so I ended up swapping the pump for a 600 litre one. Result = silent running : )
Just my two pennies.
You can also relieve some of the noise by removing the rubber seal around the impeller area. This helps reduce the pressure by allowing water to escape from the impeller area but does restrict the flow a little.
You can check if its the pump or impeller by simply removing the impeller. If the pump runs silently which I think it will you know you have a noisy impeller the main cause of which I believe is air pockets trapped.

dont listen to the eheim people!
i use a top fin 500gph, and mine is quieter than the eheims or mags. i have it in a 6x6x6 res, and running through 3/4" outlets/inlets, through to 1/2" tubing to waterblock, etc... even with FULL load (tube completely crimped), it is still silent. the only way you can hear it is if you have your ear to resevoir.
i think it may be the pump, if it's not too old, go take it back.

I'm using the geyser brand (http://www.ocforums.com), it's working great.
This is the pump (http://www.ocforums.com) for me, try it too.

Damn if the spammer (both of the names above that are now banned) didn't dig up a really old thread to post their spam. Both were registered from the same IP address (Philippines registered) and had the very same pump linked at the same shady store website. But the links have been modified by me to a better place to learn about computer hardware and I will put this old thread back to bed permanently.:bday:
