I've got a logitech x680 5.1, 2x 150 bose studiocraft ST 1000 speakers, which run off a, some may think crappy, but I've never found one with a better bass response, amp - some teac one. This (http://rapidshare.de/files/14206616/placement.GIF.html) is my room schematic made in oh-so-wonderful paint. Having a room without 1 corner, and without a back (well, the back is at least 4 metres behind the sofa) sucks ass. Now, sitting on the left of the sofa makes the bass "push" towards me, against my chest, but where I currently sit, I can feel it through the chair, though the bass doesn't seem as effective/"bassy". Probably no wonder, I have it cranked louder, which the neighbours can hear, but I can't, possibly because of its poor placement. I would just place it at the left side of the room, but then it means I have to move the L bose ("large" in the diagram) away from a corner (=bad? Their pretty powerful speakers for bass), and the sub port would face towards a wall, where I'm told a lot of the bass comes out of. Placing anything in the rear left corner is out of the question too, as it's the only entry into the kitchen. Are my "obstacles" to my current listening position impeding the bass (the crates are normal milk crates with a TV on top, the pc in front of them "other pc" is well, a standard pc, amp on top, but it's the only form of shelving for the amp I have atm, the table has steel legs and is hollow, vcr, dvd recorder, 2 cable boxes on top, about 12cm)? In the diagram, I forgot to draw the crate that the control pod rests on - about 2 feet away from the sub, to the left of it, not at all in the "path" of the sub speaker or it's port.

Maybe I'm just hearing things, they say wherever the bass sounds best, put your sub there, but I can't put it under a sofa. Plus, the damned logitech 6 foot cable to the control pod... I can't make out a thing on the display, I have to stand up just to read it...

From what I remember but correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the sub should be in corner. Or have the sub positioned so the sound waves can bounce off of objects.

Bass frequencies are non-directional and makes not allot of difference in placement. However bouncing the base off a hard surface will disperse the sound over a wider area and seem louder.

Just moved the sub to the left front of the room, and the big speaker in the old spot. Made tons of difference - no objects to pass through, despite it sounding better - I had "line of sight" sitting on the sofa, and I do now, and it sounds awesome. It's slightly at an angle, but the port still faces a wall, just not paraelell to it, and the sub is slightly in a corner. To think I've had it 2 years and not realised the full potential - the BOSE's sound like crap compared to the logi's.

Wstinkbait is right, low frequencies can travel through objects well although it may still be affected.

only sub bass is really non-directional. 50hz and upwards is still very directional and its very easy to tell where its coming from. That's the biggest problem i have running a 12" subwoofer and two stand mounted mission bookshelf speakers. You can still tell the upper bass is coming from the middle (where the sub is) when really it shouldnt be.

thats true, and after i heard those logictech speakers, it would probably be very obvious with them, the crossover point from teh sub to the speakers is really high. i would try putting it in the center so not to throw off your imaging as much.
