I recently bought a new hard-disk (Seagate Barracuda ATA IV, 40GB) and installed Windows 2000 Professional (SP2). I was shocked to find that it takes 45 seconds for it to boot. I think this is not OK, and I also heard that on Intel chipsets there is an utility that speeds up the booting time (like 14 seconds or so). Is this true?
My configuration is:
Abit KT7 (VIA KT133) / Duron 1GHz
128 MB SDRAM
Barracuda ATA IV 40GB
GF2 MX (MSI)
Realtek 8029 PCI LAN
BT878 TV Tuner
Conexant SoftK56 Modem
Creative AWE64

If you have some tips&tricks for me to improve booting time, don't hesitate...

For me Win2000 is just slow to boot up. Slow turning off also. No matter what I do, it's usually about a minute from power-button press to windows login screen.

The only thing that really speeds it up is removing bits of hardware. Like I take out my RAID card and it gets quite a bit faster.

Personally I wish mine only took 45 seconds like yours!:)

When I had to do a reinstall of 2000pro, it cut my boot time in half. I hadn't realised how much stuff I had put on to start automatically. Clean that system tray out!

Now, instead of being half the width of the screen, it's down to an inch wide.......and I never used half the c*** there.

I wish that my win2k would boot in just 45 seconds! You should see how slow it is with the IDE raid and scsi card in my machine. I bet you it hangs for 20 seconds just on those 2 devices.

The longer you have Win2000 installed, the bigger the Registry gets. It has to load this entire thing (avg about 20 megs) before being alowed into the kernel.

Hmmm... It could be slow yes but ...

If you got some more megs of ram I bet it'll increase by alot(I've seen that happen my dad had 64 megs in his and now he has 320 and now its speeding fast through the boot area)...

Before it would stay a hell of a long time at the login screen saying "Preparing Network Connections"

two cool tips above for u, perhaps they r useful. another thing, try running sisft sandra's performance tune up and check out the services it will relate you can disable or at least to turn to the manual initialization. good luck.

Windows 9X used to have a program MSCONFIG that allowed quick and easy edit of autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini and startup. It seems to have disappeared in Windows 2000.

Now that I have one less SCSI drive for the Adaptec BIOS to recognize (Dead drive), from POST to the desktop in 2000 has gotten a bit faster.
