View Full Version : Memtest86 Freezing?

On my 2nd computer I've recently ran memtest and it's freezing anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes into it.
So is this the highest level of ram errors then?
In other words, it's so unstable that it can't even display ram errors, it causes the whole system to freeze?
What's funny is that this machine is prime95 stable during the entire night and I've never once had problems in windows or playing games.
Anyone have any memtest86 insight here?

Are you using memtest 86+? Cause the other version aren't compatible with certain chipsets and isn't fully updated.

Also, are you running the Windows version? That may also be the problem. DL Memtest86+ and run it off a CD.

Sorry guys.
I'm running memtest 3.2 and it's in DOS mode off of a floppy.
Is this version OK with my cheap MSI Mboard?
My A64 machine can loop this test all night, my 2nd machine can't seem to get past 15 minutes.
I guess my next step is to first slow the timings down and try again.
If that doesn't work, I assume the next step is to run each stick of ram at a time?
Also, memtest knows of my processor, but it never once shows my ram and the timings like the test shows on my A64 machine.

Yeah, it sounds like it may be unstable. Try everything at stock and see if it runs ok. If it does, then work your way up from there.

Yup, start small sounds good.
I'm going to run a prime95 test again, I just don't see how it could be fine in prime95 and playing games but not run memtest32 for more then 20 minutes.

Just a follow up:
It turns out my overclock was just a bit too much.
I ran a prime 95 test with the overclock I'd thought was stable in the past and prime95 froze in the same manner.
I backed the OC down a bit and kept my timings tight and it ran prime95 all night no issues.
Ran a memtest for awhile and it was passing everytime also.
I'm looking into a aftermarket HSF for the celeron in hopes I can run it stable again with the higher OC I had on their before.
