I want to buy another raptor to put in raid for my rig. I need something cheap though, so I was checking out ebay. A lot of these are brand new, but what I want to know is if it still has WDs 3 year warranty or whatever. If it does, would I contact WD for a repair/replacement?

This is the wrong section to be asking this in. This for Deals on the internet, not warranty questions. It should be posted in Storage!!

But to answer your question, it should still have a warranty when you buy especially if they are saying its brand new. The easiest way to check is to get the serial # and go to western digitals website and enter it into their warranty check page. It should tell you there.

An easier way to explain it is if i would purchase a drive from Bestbuy, and sold the drive to my friend a year later. The warranty would still be valid through the manufacture regardless of who owns it, they dont ask for purchase verification.

also, it should be noted that raptors have a 5 year warranty, not 3.

And I believe that you don't have to be original purchaser... just got to WD site and enter the serial# and whatnot, and it'll tell you when the warranty expires. :)

It's impossible for any raptor to have less than 2 years warranty left. I got mine when the 74gb ones first came out, and I still have almost 3 years left...

The exception is buying OEM raptors that someone has gotten from dell or something. They only hold a dell warranty, so you would be out of luck.

Ask the seller for the serial numbers and then see if you can contact WD's customer service to determine the warranty expiration on the drive you want to buy.

[edit]

Dell, like all oem pc makers presure all component makers for the lowest possible price and they are willing to sacrifice warranty length to get it. Just the way it is.
