View Full Version : Sli 6800 vanilla or 7800GT
Which one gives better performance.
im leaning towards the 6800.. but im not sure.
6800 wins cuz its sli.
7800gt is alone.. thats not quite fair.. i guess

they will both give about equal performance. The problem, however, is that there is no upgrade path with the 6800's. If you buy a 7800, in the future, you can SLI those, so you can have more power without throwing away your older card. Also, 2x 6800's will cost more, so it isnt worth it. Go with a single 7800 for now.

I'd go 7800GT or GTX... you can always add a second later. Also the 7800 cores produce less heat than the 6800 cores... which is always a good thing for we OC'ers.
I have 6800s and a 7800... however on different platforms, so I have no real world or synthetic benches/comparisons to share in the configuration you're describing. ...but if it fits your budget, I say get a new gen 7800 card.

i was looking at the eVGA ones for $100 but those are much better for $15 more.
I currently play UT2004, and plan to buy HL2 and some other games soon, and in the future im looking to play UT2007 and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
I honestly doubt i would ever buy another 7800GT, unless they like suddenly plumted in price to like $150. Probably around christmas time, or March (my bday) next year if my video card(s) are inadequate i would just buy another one that is really good at the time.
I just want to make sure that if i do get 2 6800's that they will run future games good (for at least a year).
I think you are far better off with the single 7800GT. It's cheaper and will perform better overall as there are some applications that just don't benefit from SLI. You will also end up with a cooler case and a cheaper electric bill.

Im 16 and will be 17 in a week. I live with my mom, so i'm not in the least bit concered with the electric bill.
Edit: What do you mean that some applications don't benefit. The only thing that really demands (high) use of the video card is games.

Games need to be optimized for SLI for you to see real results. Otherwise, the performance boost with SLI may not be that great.
hey guys, shouldn't the 7800GT perform better then 2 6800's automatically because the 7800GT has 20 pipelines, vs 2 6800's would only give you 16. Mabye im missing something though.

Some games perform worse with SLI.
That someone else pays the bill does not mean you should be unconcerned with electrical usage. Electricity is generated with by the use of diminishing natural resources and and the result is not just electricity, but pollution. Everyone living on the earth, particularly in the energy guzzling USA, you should try and conserve. If we don't, no one will be living on this planet in the future. End of lecture!:)

Guess i can just go with the 7800GT, and that's not what i meant by saying that i don't pay the bill, so i don't care about the earth. lol
7800GT, you can always get another one later.
If you want to wait you can even get a 7900GT which will outperform the 7800GTX for a reasonable price. I think its going to be around $299 just like the current 7800GT.
go for the 7800gt its a good card i have one to and go for the xfx card its a Little more expensive but its clocked higher as standart also the cooling is much better it runs quit before this i have a gigabyte card and the stock cooler runs like hell
