I hear Symantec is slipping in terms of quality (and the latest AV suite is somewhat of a resource hog); anyone have any recommendations?

For the price (free!) I use Avast! AV on all my computers. It does the job and doesn't seem to interfere with anything.
For the money I've heard many good things about Kaspersky AV.

yeah avast or the ultimate av, linux. There is a frontpage story that tested a bunch of AV programs, do a search, I'm sure you can find it
