Wow, Doom95 still works in XP  It was really stressing my system here... I had to OC the 'ol 9800 Pro to break 30 FPS.

I still remember being disapointed that Doom 2 didn't have the neat map thingy when you changed levels...

However, I was too young to really get past the 8th level in either game... :)

Yeah, I used to play it on a state-of-the-art P133. It had a 1.5gb HDD, 32mb RAM, 4mb Video Card, Sound Card, 15" CRT, and Windows 95.

this thread inspired me to install quake 1. its not running in win xp. Im guessing because there is no DOS. :( Ill have to make a dos boot floppy hehe

its amazing how far graphics have come in 10 years. makes you wonder how things will be in 10 from now. :D

try running it in Windows 95 compatibility mode.

Graphics have come far in 10 years though the fun factor is the same IMO. I'm actually working on a nostalgia box right now. I have a 21" CRT, a few video cards, a P133, a 486DX4, a few HDDs, an AWE64, another sound card, and a few other things. I'm working on painting the case right now and deciding which parts and OS to use. I'm thinking I'll probably use Windows 95 so that I can run Windows games and DOS games.

Good Ole doom, I've been using Jdoom to play Doom, Doom 2, TNT and Plutonia for a while, makes the game true 3d as well along with 3d models, but you can turn them off as well and just play it like it originally was. http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

Then when I want a really updated DOOM experience theres always CLASSIC DOOM 3 http://cdoom.d3files.com/index.php?page=media

along with the LMS 3.0 mod that allows CO OP classic Doom 3

YES!!!

omg wow flashback time. i remember i only once in my life had original floppies with doom on it. it was a 3-game pack, doom, dr. riptide, and some army game. the army game never worked, doom and riptide worked. eventually my dad flipped at me (i was like 6), and tore the floppies to pieces

then around last year i went out and bought doom: CE. man i love original doom, it's so awesome haha

and DN3D, nice nice. i remember i picked up DN3D, duke it out in DC and duke xtreme for $7 over at CompUSSR. that game had me occupied for a long time

btw, wtf is with the godmode and all weapons/keys code?

iddqd and idkfa, fyi :D

I am slowly playing through all the doom wads, but I am playing them all on my PSP. B/c there is no Y axis in Doom it makes gameplay on the PSP very natural. If you have a 1.5, 2.0 or have eLoader working on 2.01+ give it a try, it runs smooth as hell (pun intended).

Heretic and Quake are vintage PC hits you guys may remember that I am also playing on my PSP.

As to original doom, I find it makes a great game to play in the car on my laptop since I don't need to use the mouse.

The D3 mod is pretty cool - I played it a while back when it was still under development. Sadly, I seem to have misplaced my D3 cds so I can't play it right now :( I think my friends might have them as I know where the box, manual, and key cheatsheet is.

Wiggles, you have ot extract it to the main Doom 3 directory. After that load Doom 3 up and choose mods from the lower right. Finally, choose Doom 3 Classic and enjoy! You'll love it if you loved the original doom. I do. :)

Jdoom with the hi res texture packs and 3D models rocks, it's pretty much on a par with quake 2 for looks. The only thing I have found is that playing it multiplayer there tended to be HUGE lag for some bizzare reason.

There is also a true 3D port of Duke 3D, and I think there are some high res textures and models avaliable if you look hard enough. I could never find live links to the resources though so I just torrented a complete copy of the Plutonium Pack with all the 3D stuff included in a automated installer (I do own the original).

ehh.. its no fun playing doom with cheats! though occassionally no clipping (idspispopd in DOOM1, idclip in DOOM2+) was fun to get around the map.. but come on, when you cant die it takes all the fun out of it :( at least playing on nightmare put hairs on your chest, no codes.. i can get upto lvl 29 (the living end) on DOOM2 on nightmare, but that cyberdemon at the end of the level is like DUDE, no thanks.. I cant even imagine the last level (icon of sin) being remotely fair to play.. haha anyone remember icon of sin on DOOM 2 how you could go and get yourself telefragged by the boss? :D that was fuuuuun

i remember icon of sin. what's this about getting telefragged by the boss though? i just remember that you could enable clipping mode, then walk through the demons face and see Romero's head on a pike. THAT was coolness :)

Simple. you know how he fires out those spinning cube things to spawn monsters? just follow their path and wait for it to come to you. when it hits you, you get telefragged. Doesnt matter if you have 200hp/200ap, iddqd or idclip on, you die :P try it out sometime, sometimes takes a while to get used to where they spawn, but eventually youll get it. Tis fun.

We played Doom Legacy at the LAN party I hosted last night. We played through every episode and level of Doom 2 in multiplayer, racing to the exit. About 2.5 hours in, we decided it was time to stop. It's fun looking back on what was happening in our computer lives back then and comparing it to today. Ahh, the gool 'ole days!

Things have changed since I last posted. I tracked down The Ultimate Doom (I suppose I have a normal Doom as well on this other disk), Doom II, Hexen, Heretic, and Strife. With an emulator called zDoom, I'm playing through the game. With that emulator, you can look up and down rather nicely... and use the wsad keys as well as mouse looking to get around.

Interesting that I play the game much better than I ever did back then.

You can verywell play the Doom games on a modern PC. There has been mods out there that have different player models/weapons/maps/more game options.

I'm not sure how many here own an Xbox 360, but Ultimate Doom can be had on the 360 for $10 from the Xbox live arcade. Much fun to be had here. There's quite a few people that still play and it's still way too much fun, especially playing co-op on Nightmare.

Bingo! I use zDoom as well. I haven't tracked down any mods yet though, but I use to play some... I still have the CDs with those mods on them! :)
