Upgrading from pII350 to xp1700+. Will i need to reinstall my os? The original mb is a 440lx and the new one will be a via266a. Will windows98 be able to deal with the transplant???

You might be lucky and windows would still work. You would get drivers conflicting etc though.
I would go for a reinstall, will help to get rid of all the clutter from the previous install as well.
RED Hot Machine is right..
Its like installing a new motherboard most likely you won't be able to get in Windows and if you are you'll get alot of errors? What windows are you on?
If your on Windows 98 you can go into safe mode remove "PCI Bus" and on your next Windows bootup it'll redetect everything.. But a format and reinstall Windows is the option most would go so you won't mess anything up..
Good Luck.

I would take my time and backup everything that I needed and do a clean install. Write down all the programs so you can re-install without thinking about what you need. I too have the chore of re-installing due to a new MoBo.
You could try uninstalling all the mobo drivers in Device Manager, but a clean install would be, well.....cleaner.
install the oldest OS first or you will be screwed.

THanks all.
I am going to try to skip the fresh install.
I have done it before with diff Motherboards but they were really simillar and used the same cpu. This one will be a big change!
I am still running win98
so my steps will be...
1. backup really important stuff data to zip apps to cd
2. ghost c: to an image on d:
3. install all my new gear
4. plug and pray
5. then to safe mode
if it dont work ill go to a new 40gig and install xp clean
ill let u know how it goes
thankz again
