Just wondering becuase I want to buy a 1.7 p4 478 but do not want to pay $200 for it. I have this thing I will pay $180 but for some reason $200 just seems to be to much.

by February 2002 the Northwoods should be out and the price will go down dramatically, if you need a CPU right now i would suggest a Tualatin Celly 1.2, or AMD....

Supposedly, there was going to be price cuts on November 1st, but I ain't seen much, only a few measly bucks lower so far. I've been waiting for the P-4 socket 478 1.5 gig prices to go down too. Just a question, why 1.7 gig? I'll bet it won't overclock any faster than a 1.5 gig (which is cheaper).

How good of a difference will the 1.5 gig clock to the 1.7?

Well, checked a couple places for P-4 prices and it appears they have raised prices slightly. Phooey, no way I'm buying anything until the prices drop significantly. They must think we're idiots or something.

Yodums, I'm not sure what you're asking, but the 1.5 and the 1.7 CPUs have the same exact core. The only thing different is the multiplier. Therefore they both should overclock about the same, which is usually 2.0 to 2.1 gig. The 1.5 gig CPUs are about $50 cheaper than the 1.7 gig right now.

Oh never mind sorry I read your first post wrong with the lines of "Why the 1.7 etc..."

But then again a 50 dollar is a big difference for a 200 mhz difference.

The prices may drop a little, but not too much. If production stops on the 1.7 the prices may go up due to demand and low availability.

It'll vary in some places... I think there will be couple of dollar increase due to the fact those P4 are being sold alot!

1.7gig because I have a better chance of hitting 2gig with it. I do not want to end up maxing the chip between 122-132fsb. that would suck. It would be putting to much stain on all my other parts. And I doubt I can make 133mhz fsb with 1.5gig chip.

Actually, to hit 2 gig with the 1.7 CPU, you'll have to run the FSB at 118 which is running the PCI and AGP quite a ways out of spec. With the 1.5 CPU, you'll hit 2 gig at 133 FSB (which is in spec) and then have a little head room above that to play. But, that's ok, I'll get the 1.5 CPU and save some money and you get the 1.7 CPU and we'll see what our final overclock turns out to be. They both have the same core and about the same potential. It depends on which motherboard you will be using and what settings and adjustments it has.
