i can't get it right!!!

j/k.. ;) i'm not complaining at all, it's just that it seems to happen so often, i wanna know how!

i build a lot of pcs, and so i put on and take off a lot of hsfs. particularly oem coolermaster ones with nasty tight clips that need a screwdriver to get them on and off. the worst i've ever done is sheer off a socket lug. today i had a epox mobo/duron combo that wouldn't boot. i had a helluva battle getting the hsf off.. in the end, out of sheer frustration, i was pressing down with almost my full weight on a screwdriver on the clip and using pliers to wrench the clip over the lug. the result: the duron didn't have the slightest nick on it!

if that can't chip a die, i want to know what will! do you peeps jump on them or something?! ;)

It happens when you put a hsf on crooked, or screw up lapping and the surface has marks or is crooked itself. I've chipped my 1000 Mhz and it still runs along happily at 1215. I'm one of the lucky ones

Usually it happens when the heatsink is allowed to rock during installation. This puts pressure on one side of the core, chipping it. Just hold the heatsink flat while attaching the clip and nothing can happen.

A true master can chip the center while the edges are flawless! I still don't know how I did this but the chip still works.
