If you have a socket 462 (socket A) motherboard and don't want to deal with upgrading the motherboard, then this is a good deal on a processor. The website describes it as 333MHz bus with 256k L2 cache, but it’s actually 400MHz with 512k L2 Cache. The model number is SDA3300DKV4E and appears to be one of those models AMD did not mention on their website. However, if you use the coding of the model number, you can get the information below from it. This is an OEM, but they offer a pretty decent cooling fan for $3.75 extra and I got 2 day shipping for about $10. Overall, I paid ~$90 for this shipped 2-day with a heatsink and fan. If you don’t mind parting with your old motherboard, then I would suggest one of the Outpost.com or Fry’s CPU/mobo deals.

I'm tempted to buy this just to play with it...never had a Sempron chip before.

Will it overclock any/much?

I guess there is only one way to find out. :D

they're supposedly good overclockers. I can't find any information on this specific model. I'm trying to decide whether it would be worth it to upgrade from my 2500 barton. I'd like to save up and get a dual core though, but this is tempting.

Well, its probably locked... and its the same as a 3200+ Athlon XP(clock speed and cache wise). It isnt 64bit...

But for 77$... you cant expect the extras... its a decent buy either way.

you could probably up the FSB on it a good 30-40ish easy. I could do it on my wife's old SocketA Sempron with PC2700!!!!

That was my thinking, too. My thinking was that a 10-20 max increase in FSB is all you could expect...bumping you up to maybe 2.35GHz - 2.45GHz, if you are lucky. Still, with the optional $4 one year warranty, plus shipping, this is a $90 equivalent XP3200 and used they generally cost more than that.

Perhaps these are just old, left over XP3200s that have been rebranded by AMD to clear out inventory?

Are there any other 400 FSB Socket A Semprons?

This would be worthwhile for a simple motherboard that did not allow the multi to be tweaked. Stock speed of 2.2GHx for s socket A would still be decent for most home use and even small business.

Update:
I bit. Just ordered one (via SLOW mail) so I should have it next week. Worst case I'l just put it in a tax prep rig that I have. I'm just curious about this thing. I'll post some results after I've had a chance to play with it.

Any other takers???
