Since Benvanz wouldn't start it, I thought I would.

Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc) is a zero-configuration virtual private networking (VPN) freeware application. It is the first VPN application capable of establishing direct links between computers that are both NAT'ed without requiring NAT reconfiguration.

Another thing is that Hamatchi is encrypted. This means that networks can be setup that hide their traffic from the networks they are piggybacking on. Right now Himatchi is growing in the P2P environment b/c it allows people to bypass the Packet Shaping and Firewalls that are preventing P2P to work on networks right now. As a Network Admin I forsee this as a serious hurdle to overcome in the coming months.

As the only Computer Savvy person in my family I see this as a good thing though. I can setup Hamachi on all of my family's computers and do remote admining for them in a much safer and easier environment.

What are your thoughts on this technology?

the traffic shapers will just start cutting on the hamachi packets if it catches on that big. it looks interesting ill have to check it out when i get home.

Its peers utilize the help of a 3rd node called mediation server to locate each other and to boot strap the connection between themselves.

What happens when the "mediation server" goes down? Other than that it sounds cool but I don't see a real use for this (for me anyway).

I just started playing with this yesterday. Great program, easy setup. The down side, is like mentioned, the Mediation Server. Since I installed it yesterday at noon, the server has been down twice. This sux, since when it goes down and comes back up, there is a waiting line for reconnecting. Now, to get a better upload on my cable connection.

Maybe with later versions of Hamachi they can have more of a distributed mediation server. Have more than one server behind a DNS name in a kind of round robin setup. Or just let the public Hamachi networks serve as mediation servers in a p2p kind of setup. Oh well, those are just some thoughts I had about it.

Well SORRY, I have been busy and all

anyways..

The "mediation server" does go down SOMETIMES, but I find most of the problems come from a unknown cause. Sometimes updating hamachi (there is a button somewhere :P) fixes the problem, sometimes restarting hamachi fixes the problem, and sometimes just wait. But most of the time the server is UP.
