Hello Pros,
Its been awhile. OK, my nephew has ask me to help him build a new system (K62 450). Now with the prices going down, I am trying to decide between the Tbird or Duron cpu. Is there a big difference? To stay with in his budget, we want to stay within these 2 cpus. I am leaning towards the soyo dragon mobo. I am an abit & asus fan, but have seen good reviews on this mobo. And as always, thanks to everyone who made my Duron 600 o/c @ 1 gig. ( I know its time to upgrade) Without this site I could not have done it.

As far as performance i believe the t-bird will outperform the duron but at the same clock speeds it shouldn't bee THAT big of a difference. One thing though, the t-birds are easier to cool.

Durons usually have lower clock speeds and are thus cheaper.

You could buy him a 600 Mhz Duron and OC it to maybe 800 easily (in a best-case scenario).

I think Athlons only go as low as 850, but i could be wrong.

durons have less cache, 192K, as opposed to the athlons 384K...and durons only have a 200mhz ddr bus, athlons can have 266, other then that...who knows.

I hear the 1g athlons are pretty cheap now. I bought one off of ebay for $60 a few months ago.

EDIT: It was brand new OEM

I'd go with a tbird...they're faster, *and* relatively inexpensive (for, say, a 1G, or maybe a 1.1G, either of which should overclock nicely)...I got my 1G for about $100 three or four months ago. :)

AT Newegg (www.newegg.com)
you cant get the 1ghz duron and tbird for 67....
kinda silly the 750 duron there is 37 bux so thats one helluva deal,
pick up one of the ECS boards and some crucial ddr and he has a spanking system with room for improvement.
GOOD LUCK!

I've got a Duron 700 @ 933. And I my 0ld 1200 would yup it. Mainly cause of the cache. I don't think it's nearly as good for multitasking as a T-bird is.

Thanks everyone,
A Tbird it will be. I'm sure he will be happy with this. Thanks again.
