View Full Version : Can I make use of this processor?
I am parting out a broken laptop, and can do whatever I want with the parts basicly. I pulled a 2.8ghz Northwood P4-M (SL7DS) from it. Would it make any sense to use this procesor, or would I be better off to just ebay it for about 80-120.00? In other words, what can I expect from this procesor as far as performance and overclocking?

generally mobiles overclock better because they require less voltage.
its a decent chip
you might even try the classifieds here right away before ebay, if i had money id probably jump on it myself right now, however im not paid for another week
Vulcan do you fold for our F@H team? That would be a nice use for it.

Well, if anything this would be used in a HTPC I am building up. I don't see any reason why I couldn't have it folding while idle though (which will be much of the time). The other option for the HTPC is a Barton 2500+ I have laying around. I'll see if I can find a nice mATX motherboard for the P4 and put it to good use. Or, I could just sell it and all my extra parts and start from scratch with more modern hardware which will also run cooler. Hard to say what exactly I will do, but its nice to know that this has some potential. I havent used a P4 in a long time... Its tempting.
Whoa...
Thats a Prescott D0 stepping... Thats one toasty running chip.
90nm, 533mhz fsb, 1MB Cache, and HT
Which two make it a Prescott? ;)

Indeed a Prescott DO stepping and because it's a moble will get you somewhere around 4Ghz.

Do Prescott mobiles drop to a 12x multi in a desktop mobo - like a Northwood P4-M, or will it work correctly at 21?

I believe it's locked at 21 only unfortunately, that means it needs 4200 just to get at 200FSB. That will be a bottleneck for sure.
