Well it has been a year now since I had my dsl. I enjoy it "high" speed connection, yet I feel like I am not getting all my money is paying for. My dad spends $50 a month to have adsl that is not always on, and speeds are some what decent. I keep hearing my friends rave about their 2mb downloads on cable modem off of newgroups. My dad browses the internet for stock quotes and email, my aunt is on once a week, my brother uses aim and gets music, and i do almost everything, so basiclly the connection would just before me. I am guessing the most users I could i have on at once for a lan would be about 6-8, instead of my 3-6 amost. I am contemplating if i should talk my father into buying cable? Would the speeds be better? Is it more reliable?

yea i have friends who download at 400KBps with cabel but its uncapped. the only downside of having cabel is when a couple of other people in ur nerighborhood get cabel, everything will be slowed down because cabel is shared. personnaly i like cabel more then DSL. plus its cheaper!!!

hmm... i'll second cable too :D However, i would say do your research on a the cable company you plan on switching to. Some cable companies just have the WORST customer service and overall performance. Some cable companies also can your up/download speeds so also look into that when deciding on a company. And cable speeds do fluctuate depending on time of day. So if your planning on playing some games (ie CS) during the day, your ping could be jumpy. :( But all in all i would say cable give pretty good performance second to maybe t1 (at least at the right time of day) :D

hehe
400kbps is capped
cable can go up to 1.5 in uncapped
you need LOTS of people on your block that have cable for it to slow down (100+)

with me cable is very popular in my town and over 500+ users are on my main so I have very slow u/l speeds and it seems like I disconnect more with cable thin with 56k when I play games

as for lans I go to thim about once a month and all the guy has is cable and we can get 20+ on with a router and still have a decent ping
cable kills at download speeds I get about 350kbps on average
but with u/l dsl will kill at that I get about 30-35kbps with cable

I would see if anyone near you has cable and see what they say before you go out and get it

go to http://www.dslreports.com and read the rating on any isp your planning to switch to.

there is no set rule of what is better, it varies all over the place. some places have awful dsl, but good cable....other the other way around, and other both dsl and cable are great(makes it hard to choose).

in my area, dsl seems to have a slight advantage....and thats because it has about twice the u/l bandwidth than cable does. cable *can* download faster, but most of the time the two are the same. im now using dsl and am happy with it.

but like i said, look up on the company you want to switch to.....you might end up having way more problems than you are now.

I switched from dsl to cable and cable, at least for me, is faster. With dsl I got @ 1.1 -1.5 Mbps and with my cable I get 1.6 - 1.7 Mbps. I never heard of cable being "capped".

too bad - a whole satielite - not shared!! no cut lines, and best part no downtime! I'm telling you guys I did the dsl thing and know people on cable - you gotta at least look at wireless...

very fast and always realiable and your modem hooks up through a nic card I hear stories of ISA connectors - ouch!

Check out your area:
the subnet (how many users) you'd be on with cable is important as well as the caps on bandwidth.
Cable is shared bandwidth, but it USUALLY has more dependable service in most places.
DSL is dedicated bandwidth, so no sharing, but again caps can screw things up, as well as distance from the nearest substation (the closer the better.) DSL also USUALLY has more service problems than cable.

Check your area out, DSL Reports, and see what the local providers say. But if your current service is good you are probably better off sticking with it.

I don't know how long you've had your cable, but I can tell you that when I first got mine, almost 3 years ago, the speeds were tremendous! I started at 5500kbps down. About a year later, they lowered the cap to 3000kbps and then this last June, lowered it again to 2000kbps. Of that 2000 and all the people on my node, I'm getting a pretty consistant 1880kbps down.

Yes, most ISP's "cap" their lines. Not all of them, but most of them! :)

If you haven't already, you might just need to tweak your connection. Win98se RWIN defaults to 8760, which is basically optimized for dial-up not broadband. This can seriously limit your bandwidth. A little boost in your RWIN can do wonders for your connection -- you have a 1500/128 line which means you should be getting about 1200/110 (losing the usual 20% to TCP overhead). If you're not getting this, try the Tweaks Forum at DSL Reports.

Someone there can help you get optimized. Good luck!
