For those who can't read Deutsch:

Some goofballs at the fabworx left a protective foil strip on the GPU and that is blocking the heat from being transferred to the heatsink and thus roasting your ATI nutz.

This was no mistake, it's an oem TIM.

I don't think any people who have just bought there 360 will take it apart and remove the foil not when they have just florked out that much money for it. Then again I've been proved wrong and people have my mate wouldn't let me touch his it's like his PS2 "Pride & Joy" never hardly does anything else. Only works 20hrs a week and then complains about stock count days he gets his hourly rate plus half on top of that.

I bet I'd void my warranty and do that. lol

they;ve recently rescinded the statement and said the foil IS supposed to be there, but they also said it'd be better off without it. I agree, I wouldn't want to void my warranty by opening it and pulling off the foil and pad and applying AS5

Or just get that one H2O kit. ;)

lol, florked.

That is a funny typo. Its sort of like the word spork...

Maybe your typo was destine to spawn a new product...

a florecent fork...

a fork with built in floss...

"forking out money" or "to fork out $$$" is something people say sometimes.

Would foil catch on fire anyways?

It'll probably be that foil that can be used against extreme heat I still don't know why they left that on there. After a while say 1hr my mates gets noisy maybe it's to make all the fan's kick-in hopefully PS3 will have a better design.

probably not seeing how you can bake with foil...

Considering how PS2's tended to die after 2 years, I wouldnt count on it. 4 people that I know and me who owned the initial ps2's had our drives broken after 2 years =P

If it's what I think it is, the little foil is supposed to melt and fill the little micro-valleys in the chip and heatsink.

If they actually think AS5 is better than that, they're crazy. Thermal grease, including AS5, has horrible heat transfer properties compared to metal.

Joe had a front page article testing some sort of prototype implementation of this stuff a while back.

Well I notice that after playing a game that makes high usage of the GPU the air coming out of the back of the machine is HOT, the PSU is cool so I'd say it is DEFINATELY the GPU not the CPU that is causing the heat issues. I think I'm going to try to find a USB fan or something or other to hook up in back and help pull the heat out faster. I'll let you know if I find anything

How about just strap a 150mm turbine fan to the back of the box?

air cooling?

phase change :D

Well, I've done some research and the consensus is that right now the best thing to do is to get a laptop fan cooling pad and place it under the 360. I'm going to try to find a nice white one to match the box or a silver one to match the tv.

Other people have stripped the 5V connector off of a 40mm fan and wired up a USB cable to it and tacking it onto the rear of the 360, but that seems a bit too ghetto for such a nice looking piece of hardware.

Vaccum Multi stage exchange, you know, hiting 50 kelvin is always cool :D

No, it's dang COLD ;)

As for the foil:

I seriously doubt it's one of the Liquid-Metal IHS setups. I've encountered similiar foilish things on alot of laptops cooling fans. They definately aren't the liquid metal.

Anyway, removing one invalidates your warranty, so I wouldn't do it, especially since the Xbox 360 already has a whole crapload of problems.

It's supposed to be there. It solves various issues in the manufacturing/assembling process. It shouldn't affect temperatures very much at all. Certainly not enough to cause overheating. Also a lot of the overheating issues were because of faulty powersupply units, which have nothing to do with the main console.
