View Full Version : Do you have a dedicated Rig for downloading/uploading

Maybe an admin can make a pole out of this.
Do you have a spare machine on your network that does nothing but download and upload files for you.
IE a machine that runs a torrent app for you and basically just downloads torrents all day long.
I Think a simple yes / no pole would work, but if you wanted to get creative that would be cool
I have a spare rig
XP 2000 CPU, 1gig DDR, and LOTS AND LOTS of hard drive space. I have a 7mb / 1.5 mb with a 100gb traffic limit.
Its primary job in life is to download all the stuff I want and server all my internet pics

do you do this in fear of catching a virus or just becuase you don't want the downloads to slow your computer while you do other things?

My answer is no, i use my main rig but i only download over night or when i'm at work because downloading torrents kicks the hell out of my connection when i'm gaming.

Not for fear of viruses, just because I hate having my main rig in use 24/7 for downloading.
I like being able to shut down, reboot, change hardware, install and un-install and toy around without fear of messing up a download.
I can also keep my main rig locked down a bit tigher than the torrent rig. SO I guess ya security is a small part of it.
Yes downloading lots of torrents does take a performance hit on a rig that is why I built a rig strong enough to handle lots of tasks and torrents. I am not saying a P2 rig with 128mb of ram can't download torrents, I am just saying a higher end rig does it easier and can handle more load.
As for connection killing.
If you have a good connection you should try the way I have it setup.
I have my cable modem split into a switch and then ran to two routers, one router handles all torrent and server traffic the other router handles gaming and basic lan stuff.
The setup seems to work great. My torrents are even faster than ever, getting as much as 700kBps down on a single torrent while still being able to play Fear online without lag.

Really, i never do that well with my torrents! :-/ I currently have my cable modem to my WRT54G then out to my switch and to all my computers, maybe i have to try something different.

Sounds like a great idea, Capt Fiero.
Playing CSS with Azureus in the background totally lags up the game. Maybe I'll get a cheap computer up to one of the open ports on my switch.

ive been doing this for a while. got a dedicated box, get this, a 266 p2 runnin win2000 and azureus, on the dmz from a smoothie box. got about 150 megs crammed in there and it works like a champ! All it does is work azureus and an I2P router service. got azureus set to download all working torrents to the meager 4gig local hdd, then transfer it over to a much larger file server when its finished downloading.
i do it for A) like posted above, i dont wanna have my main rig or lappy bogged down when im working on them.
and B) way more secure

This is how my network is setup. http://captfiero.com/network.jpg

This is how my network is setup. Wow why so many switches?

The switches allow me to have a direct line to the server without going into any router, as well as allow the server a direct line to a router and to a server.
But the 2nd router is for the other half of the network to keep it secure.
I don't know how to explain it. But it works and I am happy.
I have one on at home on my smoothwalls DMZ interface, and yes they are all legit torrents I host. All diggnation podcasts from revision3.com because hosting a popular video podcast takes a ton of bandwith and I wanted to help them out.

I used to have one, till my main rig died then my torrent rig became my backup. I will have one as soon as i rebuild my main rig

I don't download as much as i used to, and with 8mbit internet i care little to run it on the same pc as my game.

8mbit internet
   Damn, what does that cost ya?!?!

8mbit down / 1mbit up + internet telephony and analog tv & radio...for what? 65€ a month or so? My parents have had it for at least 5 years now, recently got a speedgrade from 4 to 8 down.

I have 7mbit connection for about $40 USD. It has nothing to do with total speed but having a torrent appy running even at 50kBps seems to affect game performance and ping times. So having a seperat box for gaming and torrenting just seemed to work better for me.

No won't work in my case as I would need 2 boxes to do it anyway. I need the switchs at diffrent places so the network can branch off in seperate rooms.
Thay are good quality switches. Not hubs or anything so I don't see where you say the switches are bad.
It's just cascading switches like you are doing isn't that great a idea unless you really have too, here is a quote why. On your network it's probably not that big a deal but on larger ones it would make a big impact.
In Figure 1 you will notice that all switches connect directly to a port on the core switch. (This is usually referred to as a "star" topology.) If you were to "cascade" switches in your LAN topology (Figure 2) - plugging additional switches into the floor or table switches instead of into the core - you would be introducing additional potential points of failure that will be difficult to track down. You'll also potentially place additional strain on the uplink ports to the core switch because more nodes will be feeding the port.

Yep I see what you guys are talking about, a switch into a switch into a switch.
That is bad. Fortuantly I don't have that many rigs and at no point are 2 switches connected together.
I mean heck there are ony 2 switches on my entire setup and they are on diffrent sides of 2 routers. So I am pretty sure I am safe
Yes, it downloads and uploads torrents all day long, and thats it. I do it because I dont like how much memory it uses and such, and then i can mess with my computer more without worrying about messing with the downloading/uploading.

I have thought about doing that with my http server. It has a 250gb hdd in it, and I dont see me using that much for the http. I run my primary rig 24/7, but it is somewhat noisey, mostly the HDDs that are always spinning cause I am downloading stuff. My server is in a closet, and I can barely hear it.
