View Full Version : New way unlocking XP
Vr-Zone has a kinda different way unlocking the XP:
http://www.vr-zone.com/guides/AMD/AthlonXPUnlock/
The pics on the last page there are quite interesting...bump the multi up, and it shows a XP 2000+ when booting up.
Tres chic!
Well, it surely is original.

;) That's a pretty easy way to unlock a Athon XP. I just may try it out on soon (like in a month or so) my XP 1800+ and if I **** it up trying I'll just replace it with a 2000+ or 2100+ when they become available for sale in Q1 2002. I'm definentely saving this web site to my favorites folder. :D

First off welcome to the forums, and this is NOT a personal attack, but you need to shorten that sig, as in a post that you reply to 3 or 4 times the post will be 3-4 pages long, and no one really cares, what type or printer, Internet connection, Floppy Drives, HDD seek time, wether or not Fast Writes are enalbed. Type of modem , how much Buffer is in HD, and also what the AGP, PCI specs are. Im glad u are proud of it, and all but still that is kinda useless info. There was a sig, that addressed sigs, being in excess.
Now comes the fun part, when i critique your system :) 53c load is HOT, maybe its due to 1800+ real mhz. (Good job-that's FAST). But for $4300 id have gotten some cheaper, higher quality parts, just my opinion, but its yours that counts
HS:Antec JetCool Pro Premium, never heard of it, Get a Glaciator or Sk6 for $35 and i PROMISE itll drop ur temps, and also u state LOTS of Artic Silver 2 Thermal Grease as it is a good thing=THAT IS BAD, the more you have the hotter the chip will run. All that is required is a THIN layer between he chip and HS, that will also drop temps 1-2c degrees. Those 2 alone will drop 5c id say. Same goes with the Chipset's
Great Board/ mem / and chipset, you went the right direction there. Also nice video card, could use an upgrade with that monster system, but its a good card
As Far as a case, with that SuperCooler case, id think ud get better temps a d try for 1900 which im SURE you can get with a cpu temp drop, maybe upgrade the fans in the case to some 80mm Panaflo's of some 120mm Sunon. just replace current fans for quality high cfm ones, that should drop u 1-2c more degrees. dont get me wrong its a great system, but a little pricey for what u got, My system is in my sig for $800 total?!?
1.33g@1.53 gig 10x153 2-2-2
Mushkin pc2400
Epox 8kha kt 266 chipset
GeForce 2 pro 64mb DDR
generic case with mods, and window.
temps are, welll when i woke up this morning cpu was 33c idle, and case was 21c idle. That aint bad

I bookmarked it last night and It loaded for me from there. here it is again. http://www.vr-zone.com/guides/AMD/AthlonXPUnlock/
If it still wouldn't load here is what he did.
1. lightly used eraser to expose the copper in the grooves.
2. smeared silicon thermal paste over L1 bridges to fill in the grooves and removed to excess with a tissue.
3. used a safety pin and dipped it in Silver conductive grease to connect the bridges.
he had some great pics so I hope U all can open the page.
Cheers

It loads now. Glad they got it back up. I'd hate to see an OCing site go down.
Looks interesting, but I'd like something I can do with what the avg. Joe OCer has around his house, not a US$30 tube of goop. It does look like a very quick and easy way to unlock an XP, though.

It's not a special goop, just a conductive paste. I'll bet a $8.00 tube of Arctic SilverII will work just the same. It's conductive.
Let alone the article states that you could do 1000's of applications with that small amount.
That's short bux 4 an easy unlock!
I guess, it's a case of what your time is worth..........

I'm pretty sure that you're going to start a flame war saying that AS2 is conductive, but the goop I have (NanoTherm Ice) is very much non-conductive. I wouldn't mind, however going to a local auto parts store and getting some goop there. Is there anything that'd be suitable?
Here's a quote from AC's site:
Caution:
While much safer than silver greases engineered for high electrical conductivity, Arctic Silver II should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The compound is slightly capacitive and could cause problems if it bridged two close-proximity electrical paths.
well if someone tries it with as2, let it be known.

What do you think about my SIG now [OC] Jason  My CPU temp doen't bother me that much. but I did manage to get it down 1C cooler. I don't think that 52C will do any harm or shorten it's lifespan any. It is OCed pretty high you know! That's a good temp for this speed!

I won't unlock my XP, I won't unlock my XP, I won't unlock my XP...

Sounds like you shouldn't use it in either sensative situations or in situations where you want conductivity. Good luck if you try it though.
What type of store sells conductive grease, anyway?
Any electrical supply house will have some fairly high quality
Die-electric grease(conducting grease), you can probably get some cheap stuff, but workable, at radio shack or one of the bigger auto parts houses.
You can get a small tube of good Die-electric grease for around $5. I can't claim it will keep out evil spirits and all the other stuff he said that $30 goop will do, but I do know it will bridge the L1 pins. I used to use it for connections on electric R/C cars where super low resistance connections are a must!! There was not much heat in those gold plated w/grease connections though, so I don't know If it might break down under thermal load. It should be ok out to around 65.5 at least as it is used in some applications where heat is a factor.

You mean the dialectric grease you can buy at Autozone will work?
It should, thats what it is - conductive grease. It's used to minimize resistance at electrical junctions. Even the cheap stuff will be highly conductive, but the better quality, the greater conduction. I'm not shure about the spelling - It's been several years since I've used any and you know how us old folks are.

Actually, if you're going to order some of that expensive silver conductive paste for the bridging, you could easily use that as the thermal paste between the HS and processor as well. It may not work quite as well as Arctic Silver II or whatever people have been recommending, but it should work well enough. JUST BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GET IT ANYWHERE ELSE.
Anyway, I'm very new to overclocking. I've basically spent some time today reading about it, and I'm thinking of getting a new machine soon, and overclocking it... then overclocking the old one :).
I'm looking at an Athlon XP 1600+ because it seems to be the best value and I'll probably get an Epox EP-8KHA+ mobo for it. I'm hoping I can just crank up the multiplier on it (to 12.5?) and not have to mess with the FSB because I don't want to risk messing up other hardware. I do have a few quick questions probably not worth a new thread, if anyone cares to answer them. I've heard some mobos are supportive of overclocking without modifying the chip, but I have no idea how that works. Also, if I overclock a chip, where do I modify the multiplier? Do I need to do something to the processor, or are there options in the Bios? And slightly off-topic, if I already have a heatsink/fan on a processor, and I want to put a better one on, how do I remove it? Just yank it off? And do I need to clean any previous thermal paste off to put a new one on? How do I do that? Thanks to anyone who can answer these.

Welcome To The Forums!
I think that you will find most, if not all of your answers here (http://www.overclockers.com/topiclist/index04.asp#BEGINNER GUIDES). I suggets that you read them completely,
However, I will try to answer some of your specific questions:
You can overclock your board by using just the multiplier, but by using the adjusting the FSB to the highest that your components will tolerate will give you better overall performance.
To be able to adjust the multiplier thru all of it's available ranges, you need to unlock it. A good mobo, like the 8KHA+ will allow you to change it in the bios.
The HS/Fan should have a clip on it attaching it to the white socket base. You can un-clip it, very carefully, as the Athlon's are very brittle, and easily chipped, or cracked.
Just follow this (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) link on the proper prodedure on cleaning off the old HS compound.
I hope these links, and the above information proves to be interesting reading for you, and again, welcome to our forums!
