My friend has a bunch of old albums that he wants to get backed up onto a computer. He asked me to look into it to see if it was even possible. So is it possible or should we not even waste our time?

It can be done fairly easily. Just use the line-in on your sound card to record each album using a program like Audacity. (freeware!) It will be fairly time consuming as you'll have to record each by hand and edit each track. From there you'll be able to save it as a wav/mp3/aac file. There are also programs to remove hiss/pops if they are too prevalent.

IMHO for the time/effort you might as well just go buy the cd. It will be much better quality, and will save you a lot of time.

uhm, if you can get a phono -> mic in adapter, it should work I think, no?

If your turntable doesn't have a built in pre-amp then it needs to be RIAA equalized to sound right. I have something that works...not too much difficulty, I don't edit anything though because I want the natural vinyl sound.
