View Full Version : Savage4,Any good?
Well I finally bought a NEW vid card for my rig!:D And I was going to buy the ATI Radeon VE 64MB but  ,Heard some stories about it so,I bought a 32MB Savage4 AGP Video Card,Seems perfect for my needs in the system,But on everyones based opinions,Do you think $25.00 was an okay price?:D ,TIA & Ty everyone! Youv'e been so helpful to me! *Hugs you all* Your all my new family now! :p
Let's put it this way: I put a savage4 16 meg video card in my pentium2 233 rig as an upgrade from a 2d video card and didn't get to use it in some situations.
I haven't used it in a while since I have my kick arse current rig, but I think the savage4 chipset had a LOT of trouble rendering in opengl. Sure, you could use direct3d in MOST applications, but it's nice to have a card that is completely compatible.
It could be the other way around too. opengl may work and direct3d may not. i cant remember.
Anyways, basically, there is a reason you paid only 25 bucks for it. Personally, if I were going to spend ANY amount of money on something, I would go for somethign with a little more value.
Pricewatch has the following items listed:
Raedon VE $9
Raedon LE $51
Geforce2 mx 200 32mb $37
voodoo 3 $34
I'm sure those are all better cards at not much more cost.
NOTE: Savage4 video cards aren't even listed on pricewatch. The reason for that is the same reason a pentuim 1 can't be found on pricewatch. They're outdated.

dude, when people say that radeon VEs are crap they are comparing it to todays video cards, it would whoop the savage4.....
used to have the savage2000 with 64mb or ram, it suk, but it was kickin a$$ in solitaire:D
I have an 8 mb pci eSavage4 GT in my Pentium 166, which I bought about 2 years ago and payed maybe $50 for. Since I put in that video card, I've been able to play games for which I'm way under the minnimum requirements for.
Bah return the card and get somethin decent..

I have a Savage4 in one of my computers and my kid can STILL kick my @$$ in HL using that machine. :D
Actually, the card was decent but not top-notch when it was released. Its biggest strong-suits were low price and low power consumption. Any GeForce card will stomp on it now, but it is OK for things like business apps, software development, and light 3D gaming. Don't expect to be able to play Max Payne on it, but it will play HL, Descent3, etc. reasonably well. If you are happy with the performance for the $25 spent, good for you.

You should have bought a Radeon 32 ddr le and done the hack then you would have a RAdeon 32 DDR card for like $52 uS or better yet get a Radeon 64 DDR vivo , I have not had a prob, check my sig
Cisco Kid;)
I would have bought something else but frankly,I didn't have the money at the time:rolleyes: ,I will upgrade later to something like the voodoo or the ATI 8500,But I don't really run any SERIOUS 3D & OpenGL applications,Just basic games w/ 3D & 2D pictures,Figured that's all I need for the less power consumption,(Need less power for the power supply anyway:rolleyes: ) Heh,Well thx all,I shall upgrade in the future :D

I used to have a savage4 pro... paid the same price for it- $25. I found that for $25, it was the best way to get 3D games up on the screen of my old Celeron 300a machine. I think $25 is a great price to be able to play Quake III and UT with my friends on a little old Celeron 300a with 64 Megs-- running Windows 2000, no less...
I also found that DVDs and 2D graphics looked better than on my new GeForce 2 MX card (You will find plenty of benchmarks supporting that).
So I guess what I'm saying is, if it suits your needs, don't be ashamed of it, cause at least you got a great price on it.
