View Full Version : Best wired gaming mouse?

I know this has been done to death but alot of the threads I have read are a little dated. So far I'm thinking about either the MX518 or the G5 by logitech. I definitely want a wire because my wireless cuts out sometimes when playing FPS etc... I also definitely want something with a mouse wheel that has very defined clicks. The wheel on my MS mouse is so smooth that when I try to switch weapons in Doom3 or FEAR I always pass the desired weapon by a long shot. I don't know if it's worth the extra money for a laser mouse over an optical one. Does it make aiming easier in FPS's? I just want something that tracks well and never cuts out or goes into sleep mode. Also, do I need a keyboard made by logitech to be compatible with the mouse software? Thanks in advance for all advice.

Ever since I got my Razer Viper, I've been a huge fan of razer mice. They are all wired, and very accurate. The scroll wheel and primary button positions are pretty much perfect. The wheel has enough resistance so you won't pass the weapon you want. The mouse itself has a very nice feel to it. However some people find the extra buttons a little uncomfortable.
Logitech mice are also good. It really depends on personal preference. If you like the logitech design, and like controlling the mouse with your whole hand, rather than just a few fingers, get the Logitech. If you like using only the tips of your fingers to operate the mouse, the razer is for you.

Laser mice are more accurate than optical and work better on a variety of surfaces. If you have the money, go for laser. It does make aiming in games easier but don't expect the mouse to magically make you good at games. You need some skills for that ;)

Currently, the Logitech G5 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826104191) is cheaper than the Razer Copperhead (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826153107).

And you don't need a keyboard made by logitech to use their mice :)

No, you don't have to have a logitech keyboard. Can't speak of the laser mice but my MX518 rocks. Quite happy with it. My problem with scroll wheels has been that I'd usually wind up taking the little "clicker" out of them since I like a smooth scroll and that clicking sound can be so annoying. Especially when the wife is in bed and I want to surf the pr0n quietly :). Not so with this mouse though, no annoying click when scrolling, probably about right, but I could still do without the clicker.

Well I have tried the newest Razer at my local Best Buy and I own an MX518, and I enjoy the feeling of my MX more, though I think I could get used to the Razer and easily like that one as much.

I have an MX518 snd I love the thing. The forward and back buttons make internet surfing so much easier. I think the G5 only has a back button or something.

Best technologically: copperhead. Best shape: personal preference. Personally I'd rather use a comfortable mouse such as the intellimouse explorer 3.0 than a 90 dollar mouse thats uncomfortable but has 2000 dpi

another fan of the mx518 here...

I think the G5 only has a back button or something.

that's why i grabbed the 518 instead of the g5... i like the two buttons esp for use in games such as bf2

I have a G5, but I don't like the way the scroll wheel moves from side to side. It makes it more difficult to depress the scroll wheel. (Because it's moving from side to side.)

Other than that, the G5 is a great gaming mouse. I like the textured feel better than the MX510 & 518. The mouse "feet" material is also a nice little improvement over their past MX series.

I've tried the Razer Diamondback, and it just ended up giving me wrist fatigue. (Horrible ergonomics.)

MX 518 or G5. Those are your choices.

G5 is your mouse as long as it feels comfortable in your hand.

It uses the same optical technology as the Copperhead. The key functional differences between the G5 and the Copperhead is that the G5 allows you to adjust sensitivity on the fly directly from the mouse, no drivers required. The Copperhead allows you to store button assignments and some settings inside the mouse and take it from one computer to another. Both of those are somewhat extraneous items...so, it mostly comes down to hand positioning and feel. The Razer has that low profile steer it with your fingertips thing going. The Logitech has more of a resting in your hand steer it with your wrist type. And, price. I prefer the G5 myself.

Thanks for all the input. I went to best buy and tried out the G5 and MX518. Both are very nice but the G5 has bigger "clicks" on the wheel and laser instead of optical so I think I'll get that as soon as said store sends me my gift card for my old Playstation2 warranty refund. Too bad they want $73 for it but it beats spending money out of pocket. :santa2:

I have also tried the newest Razor and didn't like it that much cause of the way the buttons are spread out and it feels kinda light. Also tried out G5 and I must say that it's the best mouse that I have seen so far and will be my next purchase for sure.

Currently own MX510 and it kicks ass, but like I said G5 will deff be my next mouse I just want to use this one for a little while cause I only had it for few months.

Can anyone compare a mx510 to the 518 or G5?

G5 just feels right when you grip it and it moves better cause it's kinda heavy. I know that they all look identical but for some reason G5 jest felt best for me. It's very smooth in movement, way better then my MX510 but I didn't try it in any game just on desktop.

If you are looking for an upgrade this is definitely worth it and if you are looking to try it before you buy it you can go to your local BB and they have it there. That's where I tried all of them out and G5 was the best, hands down.

I'm not worried about having front and back buttons for the net. Somehow I only find myself going back 99% of the time. Plus I consider less buttons on the side a bonus mainly because I'm a spaz. G5 it is. Thanks fellas.
