I was wondering how much more efficient it text-based is than the graphic one. I installed the graphic version and if the text-based version performs better then would like to switch to that. Also if I'm in the middle of a wu would i have to wait until it's finished to switch versions?

The Graphic one almost always crashes. Always.

In the stickies, you'll find Wedo's one click.

Version 5.02 console client.
That would be the best way to go until you get things figured out.

It is a common misconception that the console client is "faster" than the GUI version. With the GUI window closed the performance is in fact identical to the console version. With the window open, the GUI is slightly slower. The faster the machine the less impact the open GUI window has.

The GUI works fine as long as you don't start another OpenGL app with the FAH GUI window open or open the GUI window with another OpenGL app already running. I've got plenty of GUI clients installed on Windows98 machines that run flawlessy. This is likely a Microsoft problem as opposed to a FAH problem.

If you have the GUI open, it uses cpu cycles drawing the protein and stuff.

Ok so I'll make the switch. One thing though would I have to wait until my current wu finishes its estimated to be done early wed. or can i just install a diff version and pick up from where i left off.

I believe you may be able to copy the work from the WU you were working on into the new directory or have it use the same one(kinda the same principle as sneakernetting), but with switching versions, I might be wrong. Someone will correct me if I am though so don't worry :p

yes you can move the WU in progress.

Stop the instance running it,
then copy the WORK subdirectory, AND the queue.dat file to the new directory/instance.

The console.exe will download whatever core it needs and carry on folding it.

Version 5.02 console client.
That is the one I've been using for a long time, and it has always seemed to do a fine job.

get EMIII (Electro Magnet 3), thats a 'viewer' thingy...you can track your progress. It tells you the point value, and divides it down to how long it will take per frame, per WU, and how many Points Per Day, you will here a lot of us talk about ppd.

It's Electron Microscope III :p, and it can be d/l'd from:

http://www.em-dc.com

I should add that EMIII has a boatload of options, so be prepared to take some time to learn it, and I recommend NOT trying to use all it's options at once.

It can draw the protein you're working on, though. Not as big and bold as the graphical client, but it doesn't hang up, either.

The LOVELY purple color in the frame/frames progress bar can fortunately, be changed.

Good luck, and welcome to the team.

If you run it as a service, you won't have to worry about that anymore :p

Right. The console controls the core. You should never stop the console unless you want to also stop the core from folding.

That's one reason why running the console as a service, is usually a good idea. Makes it all quite painless - almost unnoticeable.

I actually prefer running the desktop console on most of my rigs.

Granted, it does mean it doesn't start till after you logon which is a pita for most of my rigs not on ups after power hiccups.

But it is very easy to see whats going on with each intance when i 'channel surf' with my kvm's or vnc.

If you don't mind it taking a bit of real estate on the task bar (there is a program to 'hide it' which i have not used) ... my farm critters only run 1 or 2 folding instances, speedfan/mbm etc depending on mobo, and sometimes cpu-z so i don't get confused about which machine i am looking at :o So there ain't much on most of my rig's taskbars.

Service is cleaner but is too many clicks away for me to see what each instance is doing.

Just remember to always use ctlr-c to close a desktop instance properly.

emIII stats can be a little funny ... it seems to take it a while to stabilize to the right number.

or , if you are really getting 1278 ppd then u must have an intel DC cpu and a secret supply of QMD's or 1481's :D

yeah, thats pretty good, I've had some like that before, but usually the times are just off a little bit on the per-frame so it takes a little while longer.
That'd be sweet if you had that much! but I'm suspicious.
wtg, good job on getting 'er running

Your suspicions of a VERY LOW ppd are correct!

You should send those points to me, immediately, and go get the MUCH BIGGER ppd numbers. j/k :p :p

That's a FANTASTIC ppd number - bound to lower quickly, unfortunately.

Thanks for the chuckle, though. :D
