View Full Version : X800XT AIW Alternative Cooling
Hey all, Just got my ATI Silencer 4 (REV2)...
No go for this cooler on my card. The additional 2 studs have nowhere to go through the card. Oh well.
What can ya's recommend for me?
Thx in advance,

this is the ati silencer that works: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=36 but it looks a bit small. this is probably a good one, but not sure about compatibility: http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=192&code=013
Just out of curiousity, did you try to mount the silencer to the card and it didnt go, or are you just going by the manufacture thingie. I have this card and looking at the stock cooling and how much space it takes, i cant imagine why a silencer wouldnt fit since the core and the mounting system are the same as my 9800 card was, and there is nothing to get in the way of the heatsink on the port side. other than that gold cover thing.
Mine is watercooled now. i put a silverprop on it which is doing a great job. the zalman WILL fit since there isnt a huge ass box on this AIW like the older ones. Silencer 1 will fit, and im pretty sure a silencer 3 will too, but i know i had to mod that a fair bit to get the thing to mount.
Anything that will fit a 9800pro will fit the AIW X800XT, just becareful with the backside is all.

I had the old cooler off and the gpu pasted when I realized the problem and unfortunatley it would not fit. The X800XT AIW has only two mounting holes for the cooler. The Silencer 4 rev2 has 4 mounting studs, and therefore cannot be mounted without removing the 2 extra studs. (It has the normal 2 studs for the area around the GPU, and then 2 other studs, 1 at each side of the outer most ram on the back of the card). Without those 2 studs tightened down, the outer most rear ram would not have good contact with the backing plate. I'll post some pics later to show ya what I'm talking about. I could mod it but didn't really wanna spend the time doing that and lapping the heatsink.
I really wanted to see what this cooler was capable of since a friend mounted the Silencer 5 on his x800xtpe, and saw dramatic drops in temp.
Anyways, I went out and got the Zalman VF700-Cu LED today... I felt kinda good, so I lapped it also :p
Idle temps are 34c and under load hasn't gone above 57c. I'm really happy with the cooler since my load temps were hitting 80c before the new cooler. I'm not sure if lapping it made any difference since I did not test before the procedure. Even though the finish was pretty nice, and somewhat dull mirrored, I could feel the machining lines in the bottom. I have a nice reflective surface now, after about 2 hours of work with some breaks in between.
I'll try OC'ng it sometime tomorrow to see what I can get out of it, and compare results with before and after using 3D Mark '05.
I've got a brand new ATI Silencer 4 Rev2 laying here if anyone's interested :p

The above images show the normal mounting holes/studs and the extra 2 studs That cannot go through the AIW Cards.

Not bad, IMO, for the first time. :p
Ran ATItool tonight for max clock/Mem and got this:
583 @ 65c Core
585 @ 63/51c Memory
I'll tinker with it tomorrow to find a stable medium
