View Full Version : What's MAC address?
What is MAC address? I heard it can be used for WOL. How?
I've got MAC addr for my NIC and one for my cable modem. What's the difference?
Thanx.
a mac address is a physical address used to identify network devices its put on the nic card or router or some other devices by the company that made it each device has its own unique one no two are the same in the world kinda cool huh? but anyway its somehow related to WOL yet i have really delt with it yet (im still trying to get my LAN to work)
if you really like networking take cisco networking for CCNA certification it'll tell you more then you would ever guess there could be although its a 4 semester college class (sure glad im taking it in high school;) )
MAC (media access control) is a unique physical address (as opposed to logical address' like an ip address) that is assigned by the manufacturer. Why you're concerned about WOL I don't know, but your computer will wake up from sleep mode if another computer on the network trys to access it.

Well, the thing is that i want to access my machine from work, but I don't want to leave it on all the time (too loud - 11 fans). It's connected to cable internet. I was wondering how could I wake it up?

Thanx for the info (although some punctuation would be usefull).
well, you'd have to leave it on, since WOL won't actually turn your computer on, you'd have to leave it in sleep mode (the fans would still be on). You could try a program like PCanywhere http://www.symantec.com/pcanywhere/
