Well, I don't know what happened, but I really trashed my main machine (the 1.4) tonight. I went to swap out my generic RAM for some Crucial I bought, and found that the Crucial woudn't overclock to the same extent that the generic stuff did. So I pulled it out and put the original back in, and started getting BSODs (W2K). Ended up tryng to reinstall W2K but it kept locking up in mid-installation. So I installed Win98 and that took after 3 tries. This might be a good time to check out that new Mandrake distro I just got. :D Anyway, I'll get it figured out, but this is my long-winded way of saying that my main rig is offline for the time being. Good thing I got that little Duron folding yesterday!

TJ,
Sorry to hear that. Just a thought, if you don't clear the cmos after you change ram it can lead to problems. I hope you get your rig folding again!!

Thanks, Kendan. I've actually never thought to do that. I've got the 1.4 running again, though I have to reinstall everything. I may just get it folding and call it a night.

I am glad you got it working. I read about that on this forum so you could do a search. I believe that guy had the same kind of problems. Well at least you have a fresh install:D
Fold on!!!

Glad you got it working. :) Crucial has been very good to me in the past and it was a little surprising to see that sort of trouble. Never thought of the CMOS either.
Nice tip Kendan. :)
Bummer about the reinstall. At least it will be fresh. If you use your machine like I do then that sounds like a lot of work.

You might try removing the memory and re-installing it. I have seen memory not properly seated in socket cause random and varying amounts of BSODs. :)

Thanks everyone. Stanman, that might have been the case, because the Crucial is working happily on a different board, and the memory that's back on my main rig is fine too.
Anyway, all is good this morning.:)

I was down for 3 days with BSODs, too. I'm sick of windows. I'm going to install Linux someday. All it takes is time, right? :)

Had to disable onboard midi MPU-401 in bios. Was getting

A fatal exception 0E occurred at 0028:FF037A60 in VXD
HIDCLASS(01) + 00000F40.

Took days to find out HID is human interface device. Maybe it was my usb joystick.

I'll be doing a Linux install tonight. Mandrake(the easy way out :) )
Anyway. Going to set up the fah client on it and check times. I should be able to guage the difference between two 1.4 Athlons running Win98 and Mandrake 8.x, at least by this weekend.

Cool. Please let me know how it turns out. I would love to give windows the boot (no pun intended). It would probably be a major undertaking though, since I know very little about Linux. First thing I need to know is, if I dl Linux on the net (the free way :) ), how do I make an installation disk and cd? And, what's the story on WinLinux? I saw it here. http://www.linuxnewbie.org
about half way down the page.

Well, I cheated. I bought the Mandrake 8.1 distro which isn't much more difficult than installing Windows. ;) Well, maybe a little, but not bad.
It's installed but there are a lot of things that I want to configure which is why it will probably not be done until this weekend. Basic normal user installation is easy though. I want to set up a site (apache, mysql, php forum etc) from my cable connection, just to do it.
I don't think it's all that hard to dl and make the CD's though. Never tried. I believe that there is even some way to install it through windows, but can't confirm that.

I checked out the WinLinux thing and it looks like they forgot to renew their domain name or something. Maybe the site isn't up yet? It pointed to a domain registar. There is Lindows too but I can't remember where I saw that. Looked interesting.

I bought the Mandrake 8.1 distro too, with the thought that I'd install it on one of my boxes to play with and learn on in all my spare time. :D Trouble is, I never get any spare time, and when I do, I'm hanging around reading the forums. I actually considered installing it as a dual boot on this, my main machine, with its nice clean Win98SE install, but I'm kind of saving this machine for my copy of XP which will be here next week. So maybe if I get ambitious I'll check out Mandrake over the long weekend, maybe on my new Duron box.

That site was there a couple of days ago. Who knows. I read WinLinux installs through windows.

I figured that they either ran out of money and the domain expired or they forgot and the domain expired. Maybe they are changing servers, although this can be done almost seemlessly if they keep the site on both servers till the dns can be changed. Who knows? Looks like a good idea htough.

TJ- I use a completely separate HD for it and don't make changes to the MBR. Instead I use a bootdisk. Installed Linux before with a shared HD and didn't like the distro. So I wiped it and almost lost info on my Windows partition. Tax info, misc docs, etc. Stuff that I didn't want to lose or mess around restoring from backup.

Good idea. I just bought a couple of 1.2g Quantum hard drives. I think I'll load it on one of those and try it that way. I was going to set up a dual boot on my Duron, which is strictly for folding, but your way, if I don't like it I can dump it easily. :D I really ought to learn a bit about Linux, though, so I guess I'll give it a chance. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the tip, Ploaf.
