I can't open current registry backups. I boot to DOS, at prompt I type command...then scanreg/restore. When Restore Registry opens it only shows 4 backups from last Jan...10 months ago (this is probably due to the fact that I used Microsoft Backup to restore everything...don't know why it doesn't add new backups though). I have found the recent backups using FIND FILES and FOLDERS and they are in a zip format. What happens if I unzip them...would they then show up using scanreg/restore? Could I save one in a different folder and use it when needed? eeerrrr...I stumbled on these zipfiles and no longer know how I found them...any help? I know it's not "registry backups" or "backups" in Find Files and Folders....(I just restored a neighbor's registry so it is not like I don't know what to do...I just don't know what to do!)

which windows you use? 98?

if you unzip it, the reg file will get bigger since it's not compressed............

you can save the reg file any where you want as long as the registry program allows you to locate the back up.......it's the best to let windows choose the location where it wants to save backup reg files because it will know how to locate it....

if you are not sure about zip file, why not do a separate backup
this one is something that you have to try to see...........i can't tell you how because i'm using windows xp............

guess it wasn't a zip file....just has the same icon (C clamp with file cabinet) they are .cab format (FIND>sysbckup). I did find a way to manually save the registry and it showed up on DOS. Thanks for your help

don't mess up with your cab file if you aren't sure
