Alternative operating systems

Well basically i have always used the easiest and most popular operating systems but what i wanna know if there are any obsure os out there or ones that are made as projects by people if you know what i mean or an os that is realy cool/fun and different that doesnt behave or look like the likes of xp and such..and i'm not referring to linux...
