View Full Version : Nooooo! my processor!
this was a very close call, lol, my fans on my alpha died :(, evidently one died last night and it went quietly. i started to notice things freezing up so i was about to up the vcore a little to make things stable again but then i thought i would just do it in the morning (being lazy has paid off here, lol). then when i woke up this morning and turned on my computer it was making a buzzing noise so when i got into windows i checked the hardware monitor and it showed the 2 fans at 0rpm and the cpu temp at 69c!!!! (i was running F@H). then my screen froze up and blanked out  . grrr, after saying a few choice phrases about having my processor go up in smoke. i tried to calm myself thinking about the toms hardware video with the temp protection, lol. that didnt help.
so i came to the conclusion that maybe the fan headers on the motherboard burnt out. checked them and they all had power.
i thought my processor died at that point :( but im too stubborn to give up! hehe
then i swiped the fans off my swiftech and put them on the alpha and plugged everything back in. ahhh boot screen, windows screen! :) (so far so good, lol). ive been running F@H for the past 4 hours and my processor is still good! hehe. and my temps are a nice comfy 32c under full load! :)
the only downside is the noise, lol
anyone know where i can get some decent (quiet) fans for the alpha? i dont really care much for the plane in my room, lol.
Try these guys out:

I usually buy my fans and stuff from http://www.kdcomputers.com/ , they have good prices and prompt shipping. I've bought from coolerguys too, they are also ok.

look at www.sidewindercomputers.com, they have every fan you could logically want or need.......i think 31CFM should be enough to cool a PIII.....
That's amazing how it didn't die.. Jeezes :)
Can't you set your motherboard monitor so if the fans reaches 0rpm it'll shut down by itself?

no surprise here, intel built the PIIIs to survive stuff like that, look at the tomshardware Article on heat contorol....hes just lucky it wasnt an Athlon....

I was swapping heatsinks one day, when I got a phone call. After the call I booted my machine up forgetting that I had taken the old hs off but didn't put the new one on. After booting up windows MBM5 ran, and cpu temp was 71C ! I pulled the pwr cord asap... poor old 700e... I stalute you... but wait... a mear reboot (this time with the heatsink fan on) and IT LIVES!
The intel cores are tuff enought, it took me direct die h2o cooling with a 700e @ 2.2Volts @1GHz+ for months to finally destroy a intel core!
... LOL If you guys owned AMD chips your chips would have fried to death :D

Another nice thing about this site is that you can listen to most of the fans they sell and decide if you can live with the noise they make! :D
The delta files sound already damn loud out of my speaker on a low setting than they would in my computer!
So many flavors to choose from.
