View Full Version : Badurs Gate 2 or Diablo 2
I've never played a RPG before and thought I'd give it a try. Which game is better for a beginner?
I'd go for Diablo II, it seems to have more staying power. Baldur's Gate has a bit more role play in it, but Diablo is more playable. Try it, you'll like it.

As much as I enjoy diablo, I can't really agree that it's a role playing game.
A roleplaying game (imo) has more to do with the story, and less the fighting. While there is no "true" computer RPG out there (short of Web RPG and their ilk), the Baldurs gate series does tend to focus more on the story rather the fighting.
Realistically, all the story in diablo does is give you a reason to fight. There are few challenging battles, and virtually no puzzles. Baldurs gate, however, worked the fighting in as a progression of the game.
Again, it's all just my opinion... I like Final Fantasy better anyways!

I can agree with that assessment. If you're really looking for a true role playing game, well first there aren't any, but BG comes a bit closer than DiabloII. However if you're looking to dip into the genre as it's been set up by the marketing systems, then I think DiabloII is a better first introduction.

Final Fantasy is a RPG!
Everquest or Dark Age of Camelot both will do it. I not played DAoC yet but have been into EQ now for over two years. You will get hook on EQ once you start it :( also you can rolyplay both if that's what you want.
Diablo II and Lord of Destruction. Even though I still hold firm on the fact that I think Baal is a little ***** bitch.
i own both games and generally it depends on your interests.
I would call Diablo 2 more of an action/rpg becasue it is basically fighting. Its one of those games where you try and get the best items and you try to level as much as you can and duel with other people over the internet.
Baldur's gate 2 on the other hand is more single player based. There is multiplayer too though. It has a lot of story and it is a very long game. It takes 300 hours to finish if you do all the quests. Diablo 2, like I said, don't buy if you want story. Realistically, Diablo 2 is very short, its just that you can play the whole game over and over again in 3 difficulty levels - normal, nightmare and hell. The point is just to level up and get good items.
