Windows XP Pro

Do you have to activate it like the home edition??
I would really like to get this OS, BUT if I do I want to be able to install it on my machine and my mom's machine. Also if I buy the upgrade could I still do a clean install of WinXP or would I have to have win98 or something else installed first?

Thanks for the help

Yes the pro edition needs to be activated as well. And no you can only install it on one machine. It would only take the activation on one machine. The other would not allow you to use it anymore after a certain amount of time till it's activated.

As far as installing clean. I believe you can. You would just need to put a win9x disk in when it prompts. Atleast this is what I've read. I could be wrong.

as long as you have the same components in every computer in your house....you can install xp in every machine...since winxp will think that it's the same machine...

Won't it track your processor and its number or something..

There are bootdisks on the Microsoft site for the XP Operating Systems.

You could install it on as many Identicle computers as you want. As long as you do a fresh install you would still have to activate it on every machine. One OS on one machine has no idea it's been activated on another.
Unless you did an install on one machine. Activated it then ghosted the drive and installed that image on another machine. Then when it comes up it will adjust for the change in hardware and it may not need activation. Or then if you did have to reactivate it MS may think you just changed some hardware and allow the reactivation.

Look for OEM XP Pro. Some sites are very loose on the OEM requirements for it.

Speaking of Win 3.11, I found a retail box still factory sealed the other day. Kinda had to laugh at that...

you can upgrade to win xp pro from the following:

win98,98Se, ME(barks at this dog), NT4.0 workstation win2000 pro and xp home.

I would get the xp pro upgrade and a cheap oem nt4.0 disk that is the best/cheap way to do it for 400 and cost of nt4 disk you can to the fresh installs. if you can get some 50dollar launch coupons you could get both packages of for 300 total! Also M$ is starting at discount if you buy a family package it should be announced soon I have seen info in XP sites so must be coming out soon.

XP or wait a couple of weeks.

Ok, fair enough. People have their opinions and are entitled to them. But get this, apparently, you can only change your hardware settings 3-5 times before your copy of XP becomes invalid (after activation). I really don't know how much truth there is to this at all. But it might be something to look into before we all go out and buy XP, seeing as our setups chande every other day.

Is it a hardware change 3-5 times or the amount of time you reinstall it?

Just that I have the coporate edition and if mad overclockers here change their motherboard every so often then.. we have a problem heh..

If you really want an in-expensive os which matches up against the XP then get win2k if you don't format much or change much stuff get XP its really worth it..

With all the talk of WinXP Pro vs Win2K Pro vs Win98SE... how much does the hard drive format matter?

Anybody see a difference with NTFS vs Fat32?

I just did a home (upgrade edition) clean install. Very impressive so far. Pro may have more options (dual processors, extended networking) but for me the extra $100 wasn't worth it. I have two computers, and for the price of one pro, I could do two computers home. And I'm very impressed by the upgrade in preformance for multimedia. I only run a 533 with 192Mb RAM, and every movie and music file runs flawlessly, even with another program running. Unheard of for me in 98se. And not a single crash thus far. Definately unheard of. I even tried to crash (WMP and copying 3 different files :) and there wasn't a pause. Impressive so far...

Kid

BTW, I'm not a MS lover... I just have noticed they have put out a halfway decent product (for once).
