I just got bf2 (my little cousin got me into it) but my comp is running it as well as i thought i would. I play ut04 w/ settings all the way up on everything w/o a problem. I would think its the mem. cause right now I only have 512 but i just ordered 2gig of mem from the egg and a 450watt psu. Can someone please let me know whats hurting me the most from playing this game to my rigs full potential?

Ram helps alot(2gigs makes a big diff), but your video card looks like it could use a little boost, as well as your CPU.

With the 2 gig upgrade, you probably will be able to play at all medium settings at 1024x768 resolution.

Looking at your PC specs, I would say everything needs an upgrade.

Ram will help the load times, but will not make it run smooth.

yes it will. everyone who has added ram in BF2 has said they get smoother gameplay.

Well besides the obvious . Im not asking what it'll take to run it at high settings im asking what is keeping it from running smooth. ;)

Ok I run a 64 man server and Play this game constantly. Heres my take on it.

First off your processor is fine so lets get that out of the way.

Yes, the 2 gig of ram is a Must in my book, It helps with load times greatly, it also smooths out game play.

Your vidio card, Thats a problem, Its going to be tough to even play everything on medium with it. From experiance, An X8?? and Up is highly recomended for this game, In turn a 6600GT and above for Nvidia. Heres my suggestions on In game vidio setings since the differences between Medium and high are very minimal to the eye.

run at 1024X768X?? Put everything to mediun and turn OFF Dynamic Lighting, turn OFF shadows, And Dont use ANY AA or AF. leave it off. Make sure your vidio card driver settings are at aplication control for AA and AF, dont force it.

If this doesnt work, Turn World lighting to low, and Terrain to low(Not a huge difference in looks). Remember its a FPS shooter and The Biggest thing to remember, is it doesnt matter How pretty it looks, It matters how smooth it runs so you get Kills instead of studder and deaths..

Try that, But until you get more than 512 of ram, I would wait to try much of anything, except turning off the things i mentioned, and Put all settings in game to LOW.

I used to play BF2 on an X700. I ran 1280x960, medium all except geometry and view distance, which was at highest. Framerate averaged in the upper 40's.

My post was made from experiances with alot of players complaints on my forum. Ive gotten most if not all of there games running smoothly by testing and trying many different options. I help so many people with there settings, i hardly have time to play the game myself these days. LOL. It drives me nutz sometimes.

To echo what everyone else said, DEFINITLY GO FOR 2GB of memory.

Did this last week and I really didn't think that I'd see as much of a difference as everyone says going from 1gb -> 2gb, but it was definitly worth the upgrade for BF2.

With an X700 Id go 1024x768 and medium settings Maybe high on terrain, Put shadows to low, and Dynamic lighting to low and Put AF on Off.

Honestly this will give you the FPS your going to need. Also if ya dont believe the settings try them with Fraps running and make changes as you see fit, but make your adjustments according to FPS while in a tank, in a plane and while artillary is falling everywhere. Then you will see your Lowest FPS at that setting. If its below 50 in this game, adjust until its Higher or stays at 50fps while everything is going on.

If not you will get spanked by the guys running 800x600 at Low, Just for the fast FPS and Movement.

You can get a "BF2 tweak guide" from www.tweakguides.com/BF2_1.html that explains what every setting does and how it effects performance if you are interested.

On my system I run at high with 4x AA but I am considering lowering the lighting to be able to see in dark areas beter.

Here's my experience with my current PC,

When I had 512 RAM, games would normally chug (Quake 4, etc)

With 1gb or RAM, Quake 4 ran fine, but BF2 chugged a bit if I set everything on high.

Now that I have 2gb or RAM, I turn everything up on high and it is all good :) I usually set the AA to 2x though, because I like excessive FPS ;) My FPS is usually around 90 and gets down to 50 during big explosions, etc.

wow i just finished playing a couple of hours of it and holy chit! The game wasnt even able to go into multiplayer and now loads it up like a Chuck Norris round house! 2 gigs makes a hunormus diff. when going from 512. I have all the settings on med. and the game looks good. So to come to a conclusion it was deff. the mem that was holding me back. Thanks alot for your guys help.
