i just my latest copy of PCFormat mag (UK) and its got all the details in there. apparently bungie are 2 busy making halo3 so microsoft is converting it for vista use only.

As in the other thread, I still call BS. Especially with all the delays with Vista.

I *highly* doubt it will be 'Vista-only'. By the Vista comes out, Halo 3 will already be in full swing and no one will want to upgrade to Vista that quick anyway. If Vista came out last year, and Halo 2 PC came out soon after the xBox version I could see it. But there's no way they are going to put all the money in porting the game just to have a very small part of the PC population buy it. It'd be very poor marketing and sales for them.

It's being Vista only because it's not a straight port(it would blow if it was). It's going to be upgraded to take advantage of DX10 effects and performance. Because of this it HAS to be Vista exclusive. It's not so much to do with the OS, as it does with the DX API.

DirectX10 despite what some ignorant people still try to claim will never be officially brought to older Windows operating systems. The way it handles video acceleration resources for applications and the Vista Aero shell simply won't allow it. Although the desktop looks like a fancy transparent xp skin, it is rendered in a dramamtically different way, and the way video card drivers juggle the rendering of applications and the desktop(in older OS the desktop is primarily handled by the cpu, unlike Vista) simply doesn't work in other OSs.

Again, it will be a Vista only game solely because of DX10. They could include a DX9 compatibility mode like current games do with DX8 and even 7, but that defeats the whole purpose of coming out with a new and improved DX10 version.

As I said in the other thread, that is an extremely naive view to take, and almost certainly untrue. To make it even remotely worth doing a DX10 version of Halo they woruld more or less have to re do all of the textures and 3d art of the game in addition to a bunch of new engine code. It is very unlikely that this is going to happen (look how long it took last time for a hashed together, badly optimised and scrappy looking PC port of Halo). Halo 2 was popular on Xbox, Vista is getting bad press and MS want to make people buy it. A good way to make them buy it is to rush out a bunch of games that while they shouldn't need vista to run adequately, are coded so that they do.
