View Full Version : how do i connect this unusual nic card? (pics)
hi all i recently bought 2 of these 3com isa nic cards for use in a hardware firewall, but what i failed to see when i bought them was the connectors on them!, my question is how do i connect my normal cat-5 network cable to this thing? is there some sort of an adapter? if so where can i get one and are they cheap? thanks in advance :)

'Fraid that you can't use CAT5 cable with RJ-45 connectors. The NIC in the pic uses a coax cable and is a 10 BaseT LAN card. You can connect both of these olde style NIC's with coax, but 10 mbps is their max speed.
Don't throw 'em out quite yet. Someone in your area still has a poor folk's or tightwad's 10 BaseT LAN. If you can find 'em, the cards won't be a dead loss.
well i need them heh, not going to throw them out..so there is no adapter to make these cards work with my existing lan? :(
im a networking major and trust me the only thing those cards are good for are paper wieghts. BNC coax conections are so out dated. if some one just sold you those you should find them and kill them :) i mean it those cards have gone the way of the T-Rex
..BUT! The thing next to the coax connector.. isn't that a AUI (or something..) connector! And in my drawer somwhere I have a connector that goes to the AUI (or whatever) and have a normal ethernet connector (cat-5) in the other end! And I took that adapter/connector from a nearly identical card..
But I have no idea if it works, how much these cost or if they are still available..

There is ALWAYS a transceiver available. But you'll end up spending more money on the transceiver than if you bought a new nic card.
BNC to 10BaseT (http://www.alliedtelesyn.de/allied/products/viewproduct.asp?category=3&id=103)
AUI to 10BaseT (http://www.edimax.com/Product/Accessory/ET4000T/ET4000e.htm)
thank you for the help guys, but the reason i need to keep these cards is because i am working on a linux firewall and every other card i have bough has had irq conflicts, but these are isa and shouldnt have the conflict, does anyone know the price of those adapters it didnt list on their site :(
you could always go in and change the irq of the offending device iu dont know how it works in linux but in W2Kp its not that hard.
trust me youd be better off doing the leg work and finding an RJ-45 style card that works
If you need ISA NICs just check Pricewatch. You can get 10/100Mbps ISA NICs for $5 a piece from all kinds of places.
If you're thinking of buying an adapter or transceiver then I would just assume get a couple of those instead and save the trouble of setting it all up...might even save a few bucks.
I have 3 isa nics just laying around right now. I don't even know if they work or not. I'll send one to you if you're willing to pay for shipping.
Isn't that a 10Base2/10Base5 NIC?
EDIT: Commonly reffered to as Thinnet and Thicknet?
yeah isa nics are easy to get, i have a store around here that sells em for $2 a piece.......10mbps usually. but they are normal, those nics you show are way outdated.....best to find something compatible with the cat5/rj45 standard.
