The start menu is unaccessible and My Computer only opens up a blank window. I get a error message from IE;

"Your current sercurity settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page."

Even in safe mode the start menu is unaccessible. Though I can see the drives in My Computer where I couldn't in normal mode. This isn't my box, it's a Comtrash with a KZ133 chipset MB.

Any ideas?

First thing I'd suggest is a virus scan, and also check for spyware/malware using a program like Spybot S&D.

Can run anything. Start menu isn't accessible.
All I can do is right click on My Computer for Device Manager and open up blank windows for IE.

Does it boot into Safe Mode, and if so... can you run a scan from there?

Yes on safe mode, but still can't access the start menu.

I just re-read your original post and see that you already tried accessing the Start menu in Safe Mode... sorry about that. You have no way of accessing the Program Files directory while in Safe Mode? Can you access the Run box? (WinKey+R)

In either mode hit alt-ctrl-del then under the file menu select "run" and then enter in explorer.exe that will launch explorer, if that doesn't work then re-do alt-ctrl-del and enter in msconfig, and disable anything that could be causing problems and reboot. Task manager is your friend in cases like this.

In addition, if you can access your drives from my computer, then you can manually launch any scanning program directly from its home folder. :santa:

Can you access the Run box? (WinKey+R) Yes.select "run" and then enter in explorer.exe It's already running. enter in msconfig, and disable anything that could be causing problems and reboot Will try that. if you can access your drives from my computer I can't except in safe mode.

This message rergarding "security settings & Active X controls", what's this about?

From the Run box, type the path to the virus scanner's executable i.e...

"C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe"

I got the Explorer window to open, the left pane shows everything in 'C', but the right pane is always blank with the above error message showing (sercurity settings & Active X).

There is no virus scanner installed. :bang head

How about an anti-spyware app like Spybot S&D?

No. Now you are pushing it. They have two dial up connections and neither appear to set up correctly.

The box does have Yuppies On Line (AOL) ........
