Need to know if I should even bother tonight.. I have 1 crossovercable currently connecting my 2 computers together with a striaght cable connecting the DSL modem to my second NIC.
So I ahve this:
1 crossover cable
2 striaght cables
2 NIC cards
2 built in LANs(ecs k7s5a)
linksys BEFSR41 V.2
So do I ahve everything I need or do I need another piece of striaght cable? I bought a extra straight without remembering the modem came with it's own cable. Otherwise I'd only have 1 straight and 1 crossover. I'd REALLY like to get this setup tonight, but if I'm going to need another straight cable I'd rather get it tomorrow and setup everything.

There should be a port that is doubled up so that you can connect to another hub/switch. Use the crossover in that one, and the straight in one of the others (not the one that is shared)...
That should get you all set up. :)

so your saying plug the crossover into port 1 which is shared with the uplink port. use the striaghts in the others
ok i realized you meant NOT the shared one so which one do I use the crossover cat5 in?
WAN
ports 2-4
shared port1/uplink
dsl modem in WAN-striaght cat5?
system 1 in port ?2-4 straight or crossover cat5
system 2 in port ?2-4 striaght or crossover cat5 ?
Ok i think I'm just getting myself needlessly confused ;)

You want the crossover in the uplink port (cause the uplink port crosses the wires like a crossover...so it ends up a straight connection) and the straight cable in any port that isn't shared by the uplink port (which is port 1 in this case). :)

ok it's working great...sort of
I've got internet on this system, but not the second system.
Both can share and move around stuff just not getting to share the internet access with it.
Anyone know what I need to do? Or know what I need to tell/explain so that you can tell me what I'm lacking...too tired to think for now...getting sleep and will tackle the beast when I awake after mid-day ;)

Well it's sort of working great...
Sort of due to the fact only one of my 2 systems can access the internet.
sharing etc works great....can even playing IPX type games such as Delta force 2.
Also for some strange reason the IE 5.01 ( the one included with the WIN98 se cd) every time it is acessed be it the explorer or outlook express they crash. This is in system #2, system#1 works fine with no problems.
I've tried a reinstall of WIN98se(no reformat) and the problem persist. I'd like to try and install IE5.5, but I don't have it on disk and all the downloads are active downloads so I can download with my working system then transfere it to the secondary system.
Any ideas? I bought the router so that I'd be able to Fold easier since both systems would be able to send and recieve their WU's without me having to baby sit them.
BTW folding team....I'm at my nephews school computer lab ;) their celeron systems....24 in this particular room...unsure if they are more in this school. I'm going to try and get in touch witht he system admin and try and get them folding since these systems aren't taxed at all I don't believe. Right nnow there are 3 students(1 is my nephew) with 2 absent taking after school internet computing class. I'll see if i can find out their MHZ as well....going to talk to the LAB teacher who handles some of the onsite admin duties, while there is a MAIN system admin at the school main office.

Bump...need some help here...dunno why the one system has no problems at all, but the other can't access internet....I'm assuming it's due to IE since everytime I try to access it, it crashes. Even after a reinstall of Windows 98se...still same problem.. any ideas? short of reformat and starting over?

This probably doesnt apply to u, but with my 3-PC LAN, I am not using any crossover cables and it works great. But you probably wouldnt have ANY internet acess if u didnt need the crossover...

Hmmm... this IS a real 'pickle'... It is possible to d/l IE6 without having IE open, I have it on my HD right now. Can you access the net throught programs other than IE (like online gaming)?
Edit: YES! 4 stars.... lovely.

yes..everything works fine on system #1...everything works fine on system#2 EXCEPT it can't access internet in anyway....except posibly folding@home...i haven't gotten the chance to see if it is sending and receiving it WU's.....

Is it configured as client for microsoft networks? I know that shouldnt matter for internet, but what the hell... Tried reinstalling TCP/IP protocol? I'd test out a different OS on it.

I only have win98 and win98se.
Like I said only thing not working is the secondary systems ability to use the internet in any way. Think I may try downloading gasp...netscape...that or try getting something out of linksys tech support.

Not netscape!!! :D Deosn't sound like a problem with the router, BUT, try connecting the pc to slot 3 or 4 on the router... or the slot that is working for the other computer, and if it works then you know the router is messed.

Tried swapping and nothing changed except the arrangment. Could it be the DSL modem in some way? If it required a crossover cable to connect to the router and I have a straight cat5 cable connecting it to the router. I doesnt say, but I suppose it's worth a try... Any idea why IE on the system2 crashes as soon as it loads? I reinstalled WINDows over it, and thus it should ahve corrected anything corrupted right?
edit: just checked and I've gott he cable that came witht he modem connecting it to the router...so I'd assume that isn't it.
