Zounds!! The case of the disappereing icons and copy-protected desktop....HELP!

Hey all, here's the problem, er, mystery... I started to notice that for some reason I could no longer copy anything to my desktop...couldn't figure it out....than I thought, maybe something to do with the M$ update I had applied to my system just a little while ago...
Than, alll of a sudden, one day all my custom desktop icons (mess) disappered on me and only the default icons remained....which mad me first think...might be some lame virus, so I scaned my system, and.... nothing, clear and clean....so than I think, perhaps it has something to do with the 'desktop manager' software installed on my system by my ATI Radeon VE....but I can't find any settings relating to the copy-protecting, and deleating of 'unnessicary' icons...anybody ever experience anything similar like this?

here's another mtstery, for some reason my system has become more sluggish, and runs out of memory constaintly, ever since I upgraded to 320MB of SDRAM...
Any insight on this? Why would my system drop in preformance if I gave it more RAM?
I once heard that WinME (and anything on the FAT32 core, for that matter) has a hard time with lots of RAM installed, but I never figured that I would start running out of RAM if I added some...
Oh, and I manually control my virtual memory (which now sits at 640MB)...
This is so strange, I actually had more reasorces free ehen I had 128MB installed...I can't figure this out!
Any suggestions?
