View Full Version : Poor Overclocking
Hi, all...
About a month ago I purchased an AMD Athlon T-bird 1.33 with the AYHJA Y core. At the same time, I purchased an Abit KG7-Raid and 256mb Crucial PC2100 DDR Ram.
Well, I was hoping that I would get this thing up to at least 1500 and maybe 1600, but as of now, I can't even surpass 1450.....kinda disappointing..:(
Any ideas why?
Thanks

Well, what kind of cooling are you using? If you are just using air, its pretty unlikely you'll be able to overclock it THAT much. If you want to get into the 1500 to 1600 range, you will probably need water cooling or something.
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS:D First step is to make a sig so that we know what you have & get to help you better. How did you O/C that CPU? I think it is possible to hit 1.6GHz on air with that stepping provided you use a really good HSF. Do not try to O/C with the stock HSF 'cause it'll just fry:eek:

My current limit is 1.58ghz at 52deg C.
Should i impove my cooling, will that mean it will clock higher?
i.e. down to mid 40degC
52C is pretty high. I think you'll be able to get it higher if you got your temps down. What HS do you use?
Alrighty, I tried everything...
FSB, Multiplier....it simply isn't stable....I moved the voltage up to 1.8, but I tread lightly there, as I don't know too much about voltage settings.....
I moved the DDR from 2 to 2.5 CAS
For the cards, I have a Voodoo 5 AGP, SB Live! and an SMC NIC..
Again, the board it the (awesome) ABIT KG7 RAID, the chip is an AYHJA Y 1.33 T-bird, ram is Crucial PC2100 DDR....
The HSF combo is a GlobalWin WBK68 applied with AS2....
at 1.4, it sits at 40 degrees....
I get errors and Checksum errors sometimes, other times, windows protection errors...

40C... Is that at full load? Didn't your system become just a little bit more stable when you upped the Vcore?
I to believe that you can get above your current 1.450. What kind of p/s do you have? I don't know to much about the KG7, but I would definitely increase the vcore at least to 1.85.

I'd try a new heat sink. As good as the WBK68 is, the fan is of little use - to small with too little airflow to do any good. If they fit, try an Alpha 8045 with a 68CFM Delta. No air cooler will get your CPU cooler. If that doesn't fit, definitely go for a Thermalright SK6 and a 38CFM Delta fan.
Hope this was of some use, and good luck.
I really don't think that the HSF combo is the problem...
under load, it only hits 44-46 degrees.....and the is at 1.4GHz....so I have no idea...
I am considering a new HSF, but not for now...
I am a starving university student!
EDIT oh yeah, I was planning on doing watercooling, but agian....money....
My T-Bird get's unstable if I get over 47C.... How much voltage does your RAM's get?
How big is your PSU?
You guys make me nervous when you state that 47C is too hot. I still at 118F at idle, but even after an hour of EverQuest, it might get to 122F. Now I am using PC AlertIII and FuzzyLogic that come with an MSI mobo, but Sandra and the BIOS reads 105F idle and 112F under load. What do you use to monitor temps? I tried using MBM, but it isn't an easy thing to setup without reading the manual. I definitely cannot OC beyond 139 without getting BSOD or corrupted files or even reboots.

I didn't say 47C is to hot for T-Birds, it's just at that point my T-Bird get's unstable. Other people run their CPU's over 65C without problems! ( But I would consider that very dangerous!)
I Use MBM5 and bios to check my temps, they are reporting almost the same temps :)
Well I backed off from 5T to 6T and no changes in performance so I tried to go up from 139 to 142 and froze up. I went into the BIOS and upped the DDR voltage to 2.7 and CPU Vcore to 1.75 and tried again. A bit more stable, no BSOD clobbering me, but I still hung in 3dMark2001. So I upped the CPU vcore to 1.775 and this time it was a bit more stable at 142, but not enough to run 3dmark, so I again upped the vcore to 1.80. To cut this reply short, I ended up going to 1.85 on vcore and this time I was stable at 142. Weird huh? I tried my luck and went to 146 and got all sorts of BSOD on stuff like fatal errors with Vcache and Vfat, so I backed it back down to 142. Temps at idle are 120F or 49C. I played Black and White for about 15 minutes and the temp had risen to 123F or 52C. Funny thing is I can't run 3dmark at 142. Any thoughts?

If you have unlocked your CPU try backing off on the FSB and upping the multiplier to find the limit of your CPU. Then move up the FSB backing off the multiplier until you get the best FBS and multiplier you can. You might be at the limit of your CPU at the temps your running.
Good luck
The PSU is a basic, generic 300w.....I am going to get an Enermax or something, but I am waiting to see what size I need first......watercooling....
I upped the voltage to 1.80, but it didn't help. The RAM gets 2.65v, which should be enough....
Again, heat doesn't seem to be the problem, but Imight be wrong...
I haven't unlocked it....probably won't either. I figure in order to hit 145+, I'll need better cooling than an aluminum case with 4 fans, a NoiseControl Silverado, and a dual fan PSU. I've backed off the voltage on both and dropped down to 141. Currently at idle, I'm at 109F (via MBM5.101) tho PC Alert III says 118F. At 142 and 1.85v and 2.7v, MBM reported 113F idle and 118 under load.
