View Full Version : Liquid Nitrogen????

Hello all,

I'm third year college student (I know every one hates students)
but i had a materials lab yesterday. In the corner was a large round container with liquid Nitrogen in it. Cut a long story short we froze every thing in the lab that we could find (before the lecturer arrived) including a mouse we got in the science department. (any one mention cruelty to animals can bugger off!)

Oops! Back to my question has anyone ever cooled a cpu with Liquid Nitrogen??????

Is it too cold? Would it crack the chip?? Colud you run it in a modified water cooling system???

I love turning up to labs early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it has been done, usually with amazing results for a VERY short time. Basically, the problems are these:
1. LN2 evaporates VERY quickly in anything other than a specially designed contianer for LN2.
2. It cools the chip beyond a safe level, to the point where the contraction of the silicon can actually tear it apart inside the die.
3. Condensation is AMAZING, you wind up with a layer of ice over everything.

So yeah, it has been done, usually just as a "Look what I did, I got my athlon 1.4 to run at 2.2GHz for 3 minutes before all my LN2 evaporated." but any kind of long term cooling using LN2 would be beyond what most hobbyists would be capable of.

There were some crazy people a while ago who submerged then motherboard, processor, etc in a 3M Nonconductive liquid called Flouronert, then pumped that liquid through a radiator type assembly that was submerged in LN2. Basically, they ran very cool, but the LN2 was cold enough that it eventually turned the Flouronert into gel. Also, that flouronert stuff costs $500/gallon.
Peace
John

just pinch the whole container

That is so cool!
I don't have rig that could use it but in times to come who knows what might happen!

Thaks for all the info, and Intraveinous cool job a 1.4 to 2.2 is ver impressive, even for 3 mins.

he didnt really get that, he was just "saying" to show you..

Intrveinous cant overclock jack poopie...

j/k

Yeah, they've pretty much covered it....though if you were to use it in some sort of modified water cooled system (probably a different liquid) or whatever, you want to make sure you keep your temps above -50C...that's pretty much the magic number. :)

Yeah, yeah, you're right, I'm living a lie!!! Ever since, "the accident" I've been unable to overclock at all... :D
But yeah, not me that got to 2.2GHz, typically it's some crazy people in Japan or Finland or New Zealand or something who decided to cut the bottom off of a thermos, mount it to a chip, and dump a bunch of LN2 in there. I cherish my hardware a bit too much to try something like that... Maybe it's something about being poor and not having several hundred bucks to replace everything "just in case".

LN2 cooling doesn't necessary destroy all the hardware being used... There's just a very high chance of that happening.

crazy people in Japan or Finland or New Zealand

:D :D

Heh. I wish I had the funds to try LN2... A closed cooling system of LN2 would absolutely rock.

LN2 Is not expensive.

I would not use it however - unless you had some type of
therman buffer & some serious insulation :p
Without proper insulation you will get 2-6" in of ice in only a
few minutes of the LN2 on the components!!!
(Depens on humidity)

Does anyone sell LN2 online?

what about a thin controlled container that holds LN2 on ur cpu? Can someone please give me a link to buy LN2. I really want to start experimenting:)

your nuts if you try that.. why dont u start off with a dual peltier water bong setup first hehe

ALRIGHT, NOW WE ARE TALKING!

Give us links I just have to get some LN2!

Not Nuts!!!
I dont like Nuts. :D
How come you called us almonds?

-------------------------------

I would love to get my hands on some,
even if I dident use it for cooling!
- I know the dangers, I read EVERY artical there is on LN2!
I just love EXTREAM! not, ho look, its a peltier.

i say go for it.

im suprized no one has gone into how dangrous this stuff is

there was like a hole page of warnings last time

and what ever you do dont mention mercury

Intraveinous

Oh god, let me tell you about the dangers of mercury...........
Heheh... Not really, but it is dangerous, as is LN2...
Please don't freeze off any limbs, and don't poison yourself with heavy metals...
This has been a public service announcement brought to you in part by the World Overclockers Fund and this station.
Peace

we use a glass mirrored container at work to store N2 in after you take it from the tanks and it does get condenstaion on teh outside but not inside. if I could make one of these things to cover a chip maybe you could keep the core cool and the N pooring in. might work but I wouldn't waste the effort for a few minutes of fame.
