okay i should be getting 2x74gb raptors in the mail soon. Failure is not a huge issue for me, but i don't want it to be a problem. I just bought a 300gb sata2 drive and i want to know, can i use this as RAID1? However here's the kicker, can i partition 150gb for my RAID1 and use the rest as regular storage?

Also i just taped a fan to my 80gb and 250gb.... brought temps from:

80gb original~ 44C/108F to 21C/70F

250 original~ 50C/122F to 33C/91F

impressive drop in temp :S

to do raid 1+0 you would idealy need 4 identical drives although its ok to mix manufactures

with 4 dives but 2 sizes you could raid 0 one set for a fast boot/programs disk and with the other two larger disks do raid 1 for a safe storage of media/work

its unlikly that you can do what you are saying which i interprated as strip the rapters and mirror this with half the other. if you cna i would advise not as this would be slow the raptors would wait for the other drive.

No, this is not possible. RAID stripes/controllers operate right over the top of the hardware and are not aware of logical partitioning, filesystems, etc.

Even if what snugglebear said wasn't true, it would be a bad idea because it would negate any benefit having 2 raptors in raid 0 would confer!
