Can connect w/isp but cannot get mail or browse.

Get this error message when I try to get mail from outlook express.... (Names have been changed)

The host 'pop3.odoc.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'jojojo', Server: 'pop3.odoc.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

ISP says I must have a firewall stopping it but I didn't install a firewall and didn't have xp firewall activated when this began. Have had adaware, avast & spybot for a few weeks, since I bought the computer. :bang head

Turned my computer on and off several times but it didn't fix it automatically as it usually does when I have trouble. ( ;

What can it be?

Post a hijackthis log and we might be able to track down some malware getting in the way.

DNS error? can you ping an IP, like "ping 64.233.187.99" (that's google.com)

How would I post a hijack log?

Run hijakthis then copy the log and paste it here.

Try pinging anything not on your local network first. Could be you've got a misconfig somewhere...funnier stuff happens.

First ping a website... I'm testing some video recording software, so I made a video of that, its attached below. Let us know if you get any responses, or if the requests time out. Ping an address like the one in the video, or the one listed above, both are google servers. If you get a response from the address, then type in "ping www.google.com" and see if you get a response from that. Could very well be a DNS problem. Are you sure you even have an IP address? I'm not sure what you meant by your "able to connect to your ISP". Are you able to bring up any websites on that machine? Do you have any other PC's at home which are able to connect through the router and your connection?

It sounds like you have a net configuration problem, but if you think you might be infected with something, this is what people meant with Hijackthis...

Download and run HJT from here:
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155

Choose to run a scan and save a log file, then post the log file here for us to look at.

Download the AVI I posted above, it shows you how to ping.

I gotta get out of work and stop by the store on the way home, then I'll take a look at your HJT log and make sure we find any problems which may be there. I see a bunch of stuff which could be junkware/malware... the DL manager and speed accelerator could be problems, as those sorts of things often come with hidden "goodies" (the way "free" screensavers often do also).

Is this a broadband or dial up connection? You cannot hear a broadband connection connect, so I'm guessing dial up.

Tried to read ping instructions but things have been a little blurry since I've been having this trouble and I couldn't read the text except cms (white on black is difficult to see on that monitor.)

As soon I connect w/isp I get error 10106 from avast saying it will not be able to protect my mail and news .

Did winmsd because I saw it when searching for error 10106:

Isn't a slipstream file on my computer. Is this related to ispeed?

Okay, so you are able to ping google - your getting a connection to the internet that is working. (shetawk +1!)

If you type google.com in the address bar of internet explorer, you get a page not displayed error - is this correct? If you type 64.233.187.99 into the address bar of internet explorer, does google come up?

Press windows+r type cmd then hit ok. At the command prompt type ipconfig /all then hit enter. If there are any values to the right of DNS servers, please let us know what they are.

The internet runs on IP addresses. Domain names like google are just easy to remember - A DNS server tells your PC that google is at the address 64.233.187.99, and thats how you get to the page. If you aren't connecting with a DNS server, your PC has no idea what address to contact.

This is correctable by going into the properties of your network connection - the network connection folder is accesible through the control panel. Within the properties of your network connection, you can select TCP/IP properties, then you can tell it to automatically select a DNS server or you can do it manually. The video below shows how to do that.

Ok, so you have DNS. Thats good.

I think you have a software problem. What happens if you disable/shutdown all of avast? Can you open webpages then? Also shut down that accelerator thing

When you try to go to a webpage, do you get page not displayed, or what other error?

I know EZ Trust can cause a problem like this, I fixed an issue with that yesterday.

By the way, your Hijackthis log is clean. Thank you for posting it for us, that often helps - it helped rule out some things for us.

Here is the whole dns thing....

(I'm working w/two machines, transferring to little laptop the info I get from desktop, that's why everything takes so long.)

Well heck.

Are you able to disable that icdc ispeed accelerator? If thats not working right it could be the problem also.

Thanks for trying this stuff and giving me feedback, I know it can be frustrating.

Did you open internet explorer and just type the number I gave you in the address then hit enter, nothing else? You should either get google or an error, thats what I expected atleast. It should look like this...

No, just a plain, white screen with the address in address line and "done" in taskbar on bottom.

Make sure you have your DNS numbers written down (In case it is a DNS issue)

Then ipconfig /flushdns

ALso I know you need to do a spyware sweep as I see you have "free download manager"

I never tried it personally... but malware should not effect safemode with networking...

I uninstalled Ispeed once because it prevented w xp from shutting down correctly. Program left a few folders that I deleted.

Problem started after that.

In the meantime, my isp was having trouble and couldn't send mail so I don't know whether that had anything to do with it. They said, No.

I speed either way didn't make a difference. Reinstalled it in case there was something left that was causing trouble that didn't show up in search. Still no soap. Taking it off again now.

Would modem log show anything? Thank you.

The modem log wouldn't show anything that would be meaningful to me I doubt (the long list of stuff you posted earlier didn't mean anything to me, but might be useful to someone else, dunno). I'm going to change my DNS to your values and see if if I can get pages or not.

No problem for the help. I have time before I'm heading out for the night. brb

Ok, I am running off of your DNS servers now. Your DNS is working fine. Something else is stopping you... I'm gonna grab a beer, this might require a higher level of thinking.

I've never had this sort of problem on a dial up connection, but I'm still pretty convinced you have a software problem of some sort.

You did it!!!!

My DNS just had to be flushed.

Yikes!!!! Does that mean there was you-know-what in my DNS?

What causes it to need to be flushed?

DAMNIT NEUROMANCER! LOL Good call!

Something was muxed up with your DNS obviously... dunno why... I was gonna ask you to put in different values for DNS manually which also would have fixed it, but I didn't remember the flushdns command.

Nice work neuromancer, I would have been at the bar 3 hours from now sitting there trying to figure out what else it could be. :D

Have a great time.

Thank you so much for sticking with me on this. Have been fighting with it for 3 days.

Looks like I'm going to have to go to school for computers, same as I did to learn income tax prep when I couldn't figure it out myself.

Thank you to everyone else who helped me with this.
;)
